CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll

UNC just ahead of Vanderbilt at top of CBI Composite Poll

LSU falls to third, Cal State Fullerton drops to No. 4, Oregon State up to fifth

It is getting crowded at the top. After a 2-2 week, North Carolina is No. 1 by the narrowest of margins in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll. The Tar Heels have held the top spot for 11 consecutive weeks.

UNC lost at home to UNC Wilmington on Tuesday to snap its 14-game win streak. The Tar Heels defeated Charlotte on Wednesday before splitting an ACC pair at NC State. The third game of the series was washed out. UNC is first in three polls and second in the other two.

Vanderbilt was one of the few ranked teams to have an undefeated week, going 4-0. The Commodores won at No. 11 Louisville on Tuesday before sweeping a three-game SEC set from No. 14 Mississippi State. Vanderbilt is first in two polls and second in the other three.

LSU went 2-2 and fell to third. The Tigers topped Tulane on Wednesday before dropping two of three at home to No. 12 South Carolina in SEC action. LSU is third in four polls and fourth in the other.

Cal State Fullerton was 2-1 and moved down one place to fourth. The Titans won two of three Big West contests at Hawaii. Cal State Fullerton is third in one poll and fourth in the other four.

Oregon State went 4-0 and rose one spot to fifth. The Beavers won at Seattle on Monday before sweeping a three-game Pac-12 series from USC, a first in program history. OSU is fifth in three polls, sixth in one poll and seventh in the other.

Arizona State put together a 4-0 week and climbed four places to No. 12. Mississippi State fell four spots to No. 18.

Clemson returns to the poll after taking two of three from Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets dropped out of the poll.

The CBI Composite Poll contains six teams from the SEC and five from the ACC. There are four from the Pac-12 and single entries from the Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Big West and Conference USA.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that five national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Mississippi State is 15th in two polls, 28th in another.
