Stephen Flora (Austin, Texas)
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi junior catcher
Flora’s bat was scorching this past weekend. The leadoff hitter
batted .786, going 11 for 14 with six doubles, seven runs and two RBI in a
three-game Southland series with Central Arkansas. He went 4 for 4 in the opener
with two runs and two RBI. Flora had hits in seven consecutive plate appearances
as he went 4 for 5 with three runs in the second game. In the finale, Flora
finished with three hits and two runs.
Regional Players of the Week
East
Eric Thompson (Norwich, Conn.)
Vermont senior pitcher
Thompson pitched a complete-game one-hitter in a 1-0 victory over
Maine this past Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader. He was one strike
away from a no-hitter, surrendering a two-out single in the seventh. Thompson
retired the next batter to preserve the shutout and the victory. Thompson walked
four and struck out eight in raising his record to 5-1.
Southeast
David Anderson (Lexington, S.C.)
Coastal Carolina junior infielder
Anderson led the Chanticleers to a three-game Big South sweep of
High Point, going 8 for 15 (.533) with five home runs, nine RBI and a slugging
percentage of 1.533. Anderson went 4 for 5 with three home runs and seven RBI in
the second game of the series and is believed to be the first Coastal player to
hit three homers in a game in its Division I history. Anderson had four hits,
including two dingers, in the series finale.
Central
Matt Stiffler (Bellbrook, Ohio)
Ohio senior outfielder
Stiffler helped the Bobcats register a 5-0 record for the week,
including a three-game MAC sweep of Miami (Ohio), by batting .526 with four
homers, nine runs and nine RBI. He now has 15 home runs, 82 hits, 64 runs and
150 total bases, all in the Top 10 for a season in the history of the Ohio
baseball program.
West
Stephen Strasburg (San Diego, Calif.)
San Diego State sophomore pitcher
Strasburg pitched his third consecutive complete game as the
Aztecs won at BYU 8-1 in the opener of their Mountain West series. The
right-hander allowed two hits, walked one and recorded 15 strikeouts, his
second-highest total of the season. Strasburg had recorded double-figure
strikeouts in each of his past six starts. He has 125 strikeouts this season, a
school record.
