North Carolina still on top of CBI Composite Poll

LSU stays in second, Vandy up to third, Cal State Fullerton rises to fourth

 

After putting together another 3-0 week, North Carolina remains the unanimous No. 1 in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

 

The Tar Heels beat VCU on Tuesday, Winthrop on Wednesday and Clemson on Saturday, all at home, to improve to 24-1. UNC is first in all five polls.

 

LSU had a 4-0 week to hang onto second. The Tigers topped Tulane at home on Tuesday before sweeping a three-game SEC series at Missouri. LSU is second in four polls and third in the other.

 

Vanderbilt went 4-0 at home to rise one spot to third. The Commodores beat Lipscomb on Tuesday before taking three from Tennessee in SEC play. Vanderbilt is second in one poll and third in the other four polls.

 

Cal State Fullerton had a 3-1 week and climbed two places to fourth. The Titans rebounded from a Tuesday loss to Loyola Marymount to sweep a three-game Big West set from Pacific. Cal State Fullerton is fourth in three polls and fifth in the other.

 

Virginia was 3-1 at home and jumped three spots to fifth. The Cavaliers topped Towson on Wednesday before taking two of three from Miami (Fla.) in ACC action. Virginia is fourth in one poll, fifth in two polls, sixth in one poll and eighth in the other.

 

Virginia and Louisville were the big risers as both rose three spots. The Cavs went from eighth to fifth, while the Cards climbed from No. 16 to No. 13. Ole Miss fell five spots to No. 16.

 

Indiana and Cal Poly debut in the poll at No. 17 and No. 18, respectively. Notre Dame and Mississippi State fell from the rankings.

 

The CBI Composite Poll contains six teams from the SEC, including two of the top three. There are four from the ACC, three from the Pac-12, two from the Big West and Conference USA, and single entries from the Big East, Big Ten and Big 12.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that five national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Oregon is fifth in one poll, 11th in two others.
