Florida State Rises to No. 1 in CBI Composite Poll

Virginia is second, South Carolina third, LSU fourth, Vandy fifth

After going 3-0 this past week. Florida State has climbed to No. 1 in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Preseason Composite Poll.

CBI normally uses five national rankings in its composite poll: Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Perfect Game and USA Today Coaches Poll. The USA Today Coaches Poll did not update this week, so the other four polls were used in the composite poll.

The Seminoles, under head coach Mike Martin (above), won at Jacksonville before taking two from Georgia. FSU was second in all four polls.

Virginia had a 4-0 week to rise to second. The Cavaliers won at William & Mary before sweeping a three-game home series from East Carolina. Virginia was first in three polls and sixth in the other.

South Carolina posted four shutouts to move up to third. The Gamecocks blanked Presbyterian and took three from Eastern Kentucky. South Carolina was third in one poll, fourth in one poll, fifth in one poll and sixth in the other.

LSU went 4-0 to rise to fourth. The Tigers won at Southeastern Louisiana and defeated Virginia Tech, Toledo and Texas Southern at home. LSU was first in one poll, third in one poll, seventh in one poll and ninth in the other.

Vanderbilt went 4-0 at home to move up to fifth. The Commodores defeated Lipscomb before sweeping a three-game series from UIC. Vanderbilt is fourth is two polls, fifth in one poll and eighth in the other.

New teams in the poll are No. 13 Cal Poly, No. 17 Louisiana-Lafayette and No. 18 TCU. Those who dropped out include Florida, Indiana and Arizona State.

The CBI Composite Poll contains six teams from the ACC. There are four from the SEC, three from the Pac-12, two from the Big 12 and Big West and single entries from the American, Conference USA and Sun Belt.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that five national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Louisiana-Lafayette is No. 10 in one poll, No. 24 in another.
