Titans still No. 1 in CBI Composite Poll

Oregon State is second, Virginia sits in third, Florida State stands fourth

After taking two of three at home from Washington State, Cal State Fullerton stayed No. 1 in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Preseason Composite Poll.

CBI normally uses five national rankings in its composite poll: Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Perfect Game and USA Today Coaches Poll. The USA Today Coaches Poll did not update this week, so the other four polls were used in the composite poll.

The Titans blanked the Cougars 12-0 on Friday before falling 9-7 on Saturday. Cal State Fullerton won 5-4 on Sunday to win the series. The Titans were first in one poll second in two polls and third in the other.

Oregon State went 3-0 to stay in second place in the CBI Composite Poll. The Beavers defeated Gonzaga, Nebraska and Pacific in the Husker Classic in Tempe, Ariz. OSU was first in one poll and also had a second, third and fourth.

Virginia checked in at No. 3. The Cavaliers rebounded from an Opening Day loss to Kentucky to defeat VMI and UNCW in the Hughes Bros. Challenge in Wilmington, N.C. Virginia was first in two polls, fourth in one poll and ninth in the other.

Florida State rose one spot to fourth. The Seminoles swept a three-game series from Niagara, outscoring the Purple Eagles 30-3. FSU was third in one poll, fourth in two polls and fifth in the other.

Mississippi State dropped one place to fifth. The Bulldogs were forced to cancel their three-game series with Hofstra and picked up Western Carolina, taking two of three from the Catamounts. MSU was second in one poll, fifth in one poll and seventh in the other two polls.

No teams dropped out of the CBI Preseason Composite Poll. No. 7 South Carolina rose four spots. Indiana fell five spots to No. 12.

The CBI Composite Poll contains six teams from the ACC. There are five from the SEC, four from the Pac-12 and single entries from the American, Big Ten, Big 12, Big West and Conference USA.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that five national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Louisville is No. 7 in one poll, No. 20 in another.
