Titans are No. 1 in CBI Preseason Composite Poll

Oregon State sits in second, Virginia is third, Mississippi State stands fourth

After falling at home to eventual national champion UCLA in the 2013 Fullerton Super Regional, Cal State Fullerton starts the 2014 season at No. 1 in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Preseason Composite Poll.

CBI uses five national rankings in its composite poll: Baseball America, Collegiate Baseball, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Perfect Game and USA Today Coaches Poll.

The Titans, under head coach Rick Vanderhook (pictured above), were the No. 5 national seed a season ago and hosted the Bruins in the Fullerton Super Regional. UCLA took the opener 5-3 in 10 innings before sweeping the two-game set with a 3-0 victory. Cal State Fullerton finished the 2013 campaign with a 51-10 mark. The Titans were first in three polls, second in one poll and fourth in the other.

Oregon State placed second in the CBI Composite Poll. The Beavers reached the College World Series a year ago, finishing in a tie for third in the nation and posting a 52-13 mark. OSU was second in one poll, third in three polls and fourth in the other poll.

Virginia checked in at No. 3. The Cavaliers dropped a pair of games to national runner-up Mississippi State in the Charlottesville Super Regional, falling 11-6 in the opener and 6-5 in the finale to finish 50-12. Virginia was first in two polls, second in one, sixth in one and 12th in the other.

Mississippi State held down the fourth spot. The Bulldogs finished second to UCLA in the College World Series a season ago, registering a 51-20 record. MSU is second in one poll, fourth in two, sixth in one and eighth in the other.

Florida State came in at No. 5. The Seminoles were the No. 7 national seed before dropping two games to Indiana in the Tallahassee Super Regional. FSU was fourth in one poll, fifth in three polls and sixth in the other.

Defending national champion UCLA is No. 12 in the CBI Composite Poll. The Bruins were ranked as high as eighth and as low as No. 15.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that five national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Virginia is No. 1 in two polls, No. 12 in another.
