Texas scores eight in ninth to claim Austin Regional title

North Carolina wins Chapel Hill Regional; Florida takes crown in Gainesville

 

Austin Regional - #1 Texas wins

#4 Army 10 @ #1 Texas 14 (Army eliminated)

#4 Army 4 vs. #3 Boston College 3 (Boston College eliminated)

 

Brandon Loy had a three-run double to tie the game at 10, and Preston Clark hit a grand slam to end it as Texas scored eight times in the bottom of the ninth inning to eliminate Army and advance to the Super Regionals.

A night after scoring three runs in 25 innings against Boston College, the Longhorns (44-13-1) found another memorable way to win by stunning the Black Knights (36-21), who scored in five different innings to take a 10-6 game to the bottom of the ninth. Clark finished with five RBI and three runs, and Travis Tucker had two hits and two RBI for Texas.

Clint Moore and Joey Henshaw each homered and drove in three for Army.

 

In the day's first game, Kevin McKague induced a game-inning double play to escape a bases-loaded jam as Army ended Boston College’s season hours after the Eagles lost to Texas in the longest baseball game in NCAA history.

 

The Eagles (34-26) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on RBI singles from John Spatola (2 for 3, 2 runs) and Robbie Anston. But the Black Knights (36-20) got a RBI double from J.P. Polchinski in the fourth and a two-run double from Joey Henshaw in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

 

After the Eagles tied the game in the seventh on Tony Sanchez’s RBI single, McKague delivered a RBI single of his own for the final margin.

 

Chapel Hill Regional - #1 North Carolina wins

#3 Kansas 5 vs. #2 Coastal Carolina 1 (Coastal Carolina eliminated)

 

The Tar Heels (45-16) scored seven in the third, and at least one run in four of the final five innings as North Carolina beat Kansas to win the Chapel Hill Regional. Garrett Gore went 3 for 5 with two homers and five RBI. Hitters two through four - Dustin Ackley, Kyle Seager and Ryan Graepel - combined to drive in the other seven runs. As a team, UNC knocked three long balls and 16 hits.

Adam Warren (8-2) pitched 6.2 scoreless innings, scattered five hits and fanned eight. Three relievers took the mound for the final 2.1 scoreless innings.

Travis Blankenship (3-2) lasted just 2.2 innings and gave up six runs on five hits for the loss. Tony Thompson finished 2 for 4 and drove in the lone run for the Jayhawks (39-24) in the ninth.

 

In the first game, starter Cameron Selik pitched 6.2 innings and gave up one run and Brett Bochy (6-0) went 2.1 scoreless innings with one hit as Kansas eliminated Coastal Carolina.

The Jayhawks (39-23) led 1-0 until the seventh when the Chanticleers (47-16) tied it up on Jose Iglesias's homer to right center. KU came back in the bottom of the inning with three runs on three hits, and added an extra run in the eighth.

Tony Thompson finished 4 for 5 with a homer, two runs and an RBI, while David Narodowski and Brian Herre both collected two hits.

Bobby Gagg (4-4) surrendered three runs on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings for the loss. He was the third of six Coastal Carolina pitchers to take the mound.

 

Gainesville Regional - #1 Florida wins

The Gators (42-20) jumped out to an early lead with five runs in the first, and also produced a seven-run fifth as Florida beat Miami to win the Gainesville Regional.

Hitters two through five - Jonathan Pigott, Preston Tucker, Josh Adams and Matt den Dekker - combined to go 11 for 18 with two homers, eight runs and 10 RBI. UF knocked in 16 runs on 22 hits. Eight different batters had multiple hits.

Patrick Keating (4-3) went 1.1 scoreless innings with three hits as one of the four relievers to pitch the final 4.1 frames. Starter Alex Panteliodis gave up five runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings.

Starter Iden Nazario (6-5) lasted just an out before surrendering five runs on four hits and two walks for the loss. Jason Hagerty hit a homer and collected three RBI for the Hurricanes (38-22), who trailed 14-1 before scoring four runs in the fifth. All but two Canes collected at least one hit.

 

Earlier in the day, David Gutierrez (4-6) pitched a complete game shutout as Miami beat Jacksonville for the second time in three days to play Florida for the second consecutive day. Gutierrez fanned eight, walked two and scattered seven hits for the victory.

Three of the four runs for the Hurricanes (38-21) were unearned off three Dolphin (37-22) errors.

Jason Hagerty and Harold Martinez each picked up an RBI as the Canes scored one in the second and eighth, and two in the fifth.

Sean Green (3-3) allowed three runs, none earned, on two hits over 4.1 innings for the loss. Kyle Fleming finished 2 for 4 in the second spot for Jacksonville.

 

Atlanta Regional

#3 Southern Miss 3 @ #1 Georgia Tech 10

#2 Elon 4 @ #1 Georgia Tech 8 (Elon eliminated)

 

Nine Georgia Tech hitters had at least one hit and eight drove in at least one run as the Yellow Jackets stomped Southern Miss to force a deciding game Monday.

Luke Murton hit a solo homer, and Cole Leonida added a two-run shot as Tech (38-18-1) scored three times in the first. Jay Dantzler added two hits and two RBI for the Yellow Jackets, who eliminated Elon earlier in the day.

Joey Archer had two hits and a RBI for the Golden Eagles (37-24).

Earlier in the day,
Georgia Tech scored seven times in the second inning, and closer Mark Pope tossed five scoreless innings to help the Yellow Jackets eliminate Elon.

 

Matt Skole homered and had two hits, and Tony Plagman and Jason Garofalo each contributed two hits and a RBI for the Yellow Jackets (37-18-1), who handed Daniel Britt (8-1) his first loss of the season.

 

Bennett Davis capped a tremendous tourney with two hits and two RBI for the Phoenix (41-18)/

 

Baton Rouge Regional - #1 LSU wins

Freshman Chris Dwyer tossed 8.2 innings with one earned run and 13 strikeouts, and Wilson Boyd went 4 for 6 with two doubles and four RBI as Clemson forced a winner-take-all game Monday against Oklahoma State.

Boyd had a two-run double in a four-run first, and Ben Paulsen ripped a two-run homer to key a six-run third as the Tigers (43-20) opened up an 11-0 lead after three. Mike Freeman went 4 for 6 with a homer, four runs and two RBI for Clemson.

Tyrone Hambly had two hits and a RBI for the Cowboys (34-23).

In the day's first game, r
eliever Scott Weismann was summoned to start, and the freshman turned in eight scoreless innings Clemson eliminated Tennessee Tech.

 

Weismann (3-1) allowed four hits and struck out two, getting Tech to hit into double plays in each of the first three innings. Ben Paulsen (2 for 4, 3 RBI) hit a two-run homer in a four-run third inning, and Chris Epps (3 for 3, 2 R, 2 RBI) also homered for the Tigers (42-20).

 

Alex Henry had two hits for the Golden Eagles (31-24-1).

 

Fort Worth Regional - #1 TCU wins

#3 Oregon State 4 @ #1 TCU 5 (Oregon State eliminated)

#2 Texas A&M 5 vs. #3 Oregon State 13 (Texas A&M eliminated)

 

Jason Coats drove in the game-winner with a RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as TCU edged Oregon State to advance to the Super Regionals.

Bryan Holaday (3 for 4, 2 R, RBI) singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Chris Ellington was intentionally walked, Coats singled to right, capping his night with three hits and two RBI for the Horned Frogs (39-18).

Stefen Romero had a three-run double for the Beavers (37-19).

In the opener,
Koa Kahalehoe went 5 for 5 with two runs and three RBI, and Ryan Ortiz went 4 for 6 with two runs and two RBI as Oregon State scored six in the first and never looked back in eliminating Texas A&M.

 

Jorge Reyes (6-2) tossed a complete game, allowing 10 hits and three earned runs on 131 pitches. Jared Norris contributed three RBI for the Beavers (37-18).

 

Joe Patterson went 3 for 5 with a homer, and Caleb Shofner contributed two hits and two RBI for the Aggies (37-24).

  

Fullerton Regional - #1 Cal State Fullerton wins

#4 Utah 9 vs. #3 Gonzaga 7 (Gonzaga eliminated)

 

Khris Davis had three hits, including two home runs, as Cal State Fullerton defeated Utah to win the Fullerton Regional in front of 2,185 fans at Goodwin Field.

 

Tyler Pill (11-3) allowed seven hits and two earned runs with no walks and nine strikeouts to earn the victory.

 

Davis finished with three hits, three runs and three RBI. Christian Colon (3 for 5, 3 R, 1 RBI), Josh Fellhauer (3 for 3, 1 R, 2 RBI), Joe Scott (3 for 4, 1 R, 2 RBI) and Joey Siddons (2 for 5, 2 R, 3 RBI) led the offense for the Titans (45-14).

 

C.J. Cron homered and drove in two for the Utes (28-31).

 

In the first game, Tyler Yagi went 5 for 5 with three runs and a RBI, and Nick Kuroczko had two hits and three RBI as Utah fought off elimination. The Utes (28-30) won several elimination games in the Mountain West Conference championship and would need two wins against Fullerton to move to the Super Regionals.

 

Corey Shimada went 3 for 4 with two runs and a RBI, and C.J. Cron contributed two hits and two RBI for Utah.

 

Evan Wells went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI for the Bulldogs (36-18).

 

Greenville Regional

Drey Smyly lost his no-hit bid in the bottom of the ninth inning, but by that time, Arkansas was well on its way to a Super Regional win over host Oklahoma.

Smyly struck out 12 and walked two in silencing the Sooners (43-20). Andy Wilkins had a monster night at the plate, going 5 for 5 with two doubles, two homers, four runs and five RBI for the Razorbacks (37-22). Ben Tschepikow and Zach Cox each drove in three for Arkansas.

 

In the first game, Aaron Baker ripped a grand slam to key a five-run seventh inning as Oklahoma survived an elimination game with Washington State.

 

The late-inning collapse was the second in three days for the Cougars, who fell into the losers’ bracket after allowing eight late runs to Arkansas in a 10-3 defeat Friday. Bryant Hernandez added a two-run homer for the Sooners (43-19).

 

Michael Weber had a two-run homer for Washington State (32-25).

 

Oxford Regional

#3 Western Kentucky 10 @ #1 Mississippi 9

#2 Missouri 6 vs. #3 Western Kentucky 11 (Missouri eliminated)

 

Jake Wells hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning to cap an incredible Western Kentucky comeback as the Hilltoppers rallied from a 9-3 deficit in the eighth inning to stun Ole Miss and force a deciding game Monday. Western Kentucky was down six with six outs to play.

Matt Rice went 5 for 5 with three RBI - his fifth hit plating two runs in the six-run eighth and earning him the school record for most hits (101) in a season - and Wade Gaynor (2 for 5, 2 R, 4 RBI) hit a monster three-run homer (his 25th) as the Hilltoppers (42-19) tied it at 9. Wells, who had led off the eighth with a single and finished 4 for 5, led off the ninth with the game-winning shot.  Chad Adcock and Garrie Krueger each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to close out the Rebels (42-18).
 
Matt Smith had a two-run homer, and Kevin Mort drove in a pair of runs for Ole Miss.

 

In the opener, Chad Cregar went 4 for 5 with four runs and five RBI, and Terrence Dayleg went 3 for 4 with five RBI as Western Kentucky scored seven times en route to an elimination win over Missouri.

 

Matt Hightower (7-3) gave the Hilltoppers (41-19) five solid innings, and the offense pounded out 15 hits.

 

Aaron Senne had two hits and two RBI for the Tigers (35-27).

 

Tallahassee Regional - #1 Florida State wins

#3 Ohio State 6 @ #1 Florida State 37 (Ohio State eliminated)

#3 Ohio State 13 vs. #2 Georgia 6 (Georgia eliminated)

 

Florida State opened the game with eight runs in the first, three in the second and nine in the third in eliminating Ohio State to claim a spot in the Super Regionals.

Stephen Cardullo went 7 for 9 with three doubles, five runs and five RBI, and Ohmed Danesh went 4 for 7 with five runs and five RBI for the Seminoles (45-16). Mike Meschke went 5 for 5 with five runs and four RBI.

Tyler Engle had two hits and two RBI for the Buckeyes (42-19).

 

In the day's first game, Michael Stephens went 3 for 4 with two homers and four RBI as Ohio State rallied from an early five-run deficit to eliminate Georgia.


The Bulldogs (38-24) led 5-0 in the second inning, but the College World Series participants from a year ago couldn’t keep the Buckeyes (42-18) off the board. OSU led 7-6 before scoring six times in the seventh, with Stephens’ three-run homer being the big blast. Cory Kovanda and Michael Arp each drove in two runs, and Ryan Dew stayed hot by going 4 for 5 with two runs and a RBI for the Buckeyes.

 

Zach Cone went 4 for 5 with two homers, two runs and four RBI, and Joey Lewis went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs and two RBI for Georgia. 

 

Tempe Regional - #1 Arizona State wins

Zack MacPhee had a two-run single in a four-run sixth as Arizona State defeated Oral Roberts to win the Tempe Regional in front of 3,467 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark..

 

The Golden Eagles (33-15) scored three in the first before the Sun Devils (47-12) took the lead in the sixth. Jared McDonald had a two-run inside-the-park home run in a three-run eighth for ASU.

 

Seth Blair (7-2) fanned seven in six innings to earn the win. He allowed four hits and three unearned runs. Mitchell Lambson struck out four in three perfect innings of relief for his fourth save.

 

Colby Price had two hits and two RBI for ORU.

 

In the opener, Juan Martinez, Michael Notaro and Kyle Price each homered and drove in three runs as Oral Roberts eliminated Kent State in a slugfest.

 

The Golden Eagles (33-14) trailed 3-1 before exploding for nine runs in the fourth inning and adding five more in the fifth.

 

Greg Rohan had three hits and two RBI for the Golden Flashes (43-17), who made it interesting with seven runs in the eighth inning.
