Jefferies helps California blank UCLA

Vandy wins at South Carolina, UK shuts out Tennessee, SJSU nips WSU

 

California 2, No. 3 UCLA 0

In Los Angeles, Daulton Jefferies and three relievers combined on the shutout as California blanked UCLA to kick off their Pac-12 series. Jefferies (4-2) allowed seven hits and one walk with four strikeouts in 6.2 innings. Chris Muse-Fisher fanned the final batter in the seventh and Alex Schick struck out one in a hitless eighth before Dylan Nelson fanned a pair in a hitless ninth for his fifth save. Lucas Erceg homered and Nick Halamandaris added an RBI single in the sixth for the Golden Bears (10-6, 23-11). Brett Stephens and Chris Keck both had two hits for the Bruins (12-4, 26-8). James Kaprielian (7-3, 6 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB) struck out 11 in six innings for UCLA.

 

No. 5 Vanderbilt 12, South Carolina 0

In Columbia, S.C., Ro Coleman went 4 for 6 with two doubles, a homer, two runs and two RBI as Vanderbilt shut out South Carolina in the SEC series opener. Bryan Reynolds had three hits, three runs and three RBI for the Commodores (12-4, 29-10). It was a 1-0 game after five before Vandy put up four in the sixth and four in the seventh to pull away. Carson Fulmer (7-1, 7 IP, 3 H, BB, 9 K) earned the victory. Kyle Martin went 1 for 3 with a walk for the Gamecocks (6-10, 23-16).

 

Kentucky 5, Tennessee 0

In Lexington, Ky., Zack Brown and Logan Salow combined on the shutout as Kentucky blanked Tennessee. Brown (3-4) allowed five hits and four walks in 7.1 innings with four strikeouts in earning the victory. Salow fanned three of the final five batters to preserve the shutout. The Wildcats (6-9, 20-16) scored one in the first, two in the fifth and two in the seventh. Evan White had two hits, a double and two RBI, while Kyle Barrett went 2 for 3 with a double, three runs and one RBI for UK. Chris Hall had two hits for the Volunteers (5-11, 15-18).

 

San Jose State 7, Washington State 5 (11)

In Pullman, Wash., Andre Mercurio had an RBI single to snap a 5-5 tie in the top of the 11th and Corey Olivet followed with a sacrifice fly as San Jose State outlasted Washington State. Mercurio finished with three hits, two runs and two RBI for the Spartans (10-27). Turtle Kuhaulua (1-2, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB) struck out 11 in six innings to earn the win. Cooper Elliott had a pinch-hit RBI double with two away in the bottom of the ninth for the Cougars (18-18) to force the extra frames.
