Stanford Stuns Indiana

UC Irvine wins at Oregon State, College of Charleston wins in Gainesville

 

Bloomington Regional

#3 Stanford 5, #1 Indiana 4

Stanford Wins Regional

 

Tommy Edman lined a two-run homer with one away in the bottom of the ninth as Stanford stunned Indiana. The Hoosiers (44-15) built an early 3-0 lead before the Cardinal (34-24) plated two in the third and tied it with one in the sixth. Nick Ramos had an RBI single in the top of the eighth to give IU a 4-3 edge. Wayne Taylor had a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth and pinch-runner Drew Jackson was sacrificed to second. Edman (3 for 5, 2 R) then lined the next pitch out to right for the game-winner. Kyle Schwarber went 3 for 4 with a double, a run and two RBI for the Hoosiers. Corvallis Regional

#3 UC Irvine 4, #1 Oregon State 2

UC Irvine Wins Regional

 

Grant Palmer had an RBI single to snap a 1-1 tie and spark a two-run sixth as UC Irvine surprised top-seeded Oregon State. The Beavers (45-14) are the second No. 1 national seed and first since Vanderbilt in 2007 to not advance past their Regional. Manarino (3.1 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 3 K) won in relief of starter Andrew Morales (4.1 IP, 3 H, R, 5 K), who was throwing on two days rest. In his initial relief appearance, Elliot Surrey (1 IP, H, BB) earned his first save for the Anteaters (38-23), rolling a game-ending double play with two on. Logan Ice went 2 for 3 with a run for OSU. UCI will travel to Oklahoma State for Super Regionals.

 

Gainesville Regional

#4 Charleston 4, #2 Long Beach State 2

College of Charleston Wins Regional

 

Tyler Thornton tossed a complete game with two runs on four hits as College of Charleston slipped past Long Beach State to capture the Gainesville Regional and its second trip to the Super Regionals. Carl Wise (2 for 4) drove in Brandon Murray to give the Cougars (44-17) an early lead – Charleston is 30-2 when scoring first. Thornton (7-5) allowed two hits and two runs in the first inning – Richard Prigatano and Johnny Bekakis drove in runs for Long Beach (34-26) – and yielded only two more hits from there. In the third, Blake Butler doubled and scored on an infield throwing error to tie the game at 2. Morgan Phillips had a sacrifice fly on a foul ball down the right-field line and Ben Boykin, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a wild pitch as the Cougars made it 4-2 in the fourth. College of Charleston becomes the fourth No. 4 seed to advance to advance to the Super Regionals, joining Stony Brook, Fresno State and Missouri. Stony Brook and Fresno reached the College World Series, with Fresno winning the title in 2008.

 

Tallahassee Regional

#3 Kennesaw State 4, #2 Alabama 2

Kennesaw State Wins Regional

 

Travis Bergen worked 3.1 innings to pick up his second win of the Tallahassee Regional as Kennesaw State became the first team since 1993 to win a Regional in its first attempt by beating Alabama. Bergen (9-4) allowed one hit and struck out two for the Owls (40-22), who started the season 14-20 and have since won 26 of 28 games, including three of four in the Regional. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, Jacob Bruce (2 for 3) and Max Pentecost had back-to-back, two-out doubles to tie the game at 2. Bruce then doubled off the right-field wall to score pinch-runner Jeremy Howell in the seventh, and Howell added an RBI single in the eighth inning for the final margin. Justin McCalvin got the final two outs for his 16th save. Wadd Wass went 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI for the Crimson Tide (37-24).

 

Baton Rouge Regional

#2 Houston 12, #1 LSU 2

Houston Wins Regional

 

Connor Hollis had a two-run double and Michael Pyeatt added a two-run single in a seven-run third as Houston overwhelmed LSU. Both teams put up two in the first before the Cougars (48-16) erupted in the third. Ashford Fulmer went 3 for 3 with one run and two RBI for Houston. Jared Robinson (5-1, 6.1 IP, 4 H, BB, 8 K) earned the win in relief. Sean McMullen (2 for 3) had a two-run single in the first for the Tigers (46-16-1).

 

Houston Regional

#2 Texas 4, #3 Texas A&M 1

Texas Wins Regional

 

Chad Hollingsworth tossed a two-hitter as Texas topped Texas A&M. Hollingsworth (3-0) allowed five walks and one unearned run with three strikeouts. Cole Lankford had a sacrifice fly in the top of the first for the Aggies (36-26). Tres Barrera delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the frame to knot the score at 1. Zane Gurwitz drove in the go-ahead run in the fourth for the Longhorns (41-19). C.J. Hinojosa (3 for 3) had an RBI double in a two-run seventh for Texas.

 

Lafayette Regional

#1 Louisiana-Lafayette 5, Mississippi State 3

Louisiana-Lafayette Wins Regional

 

Jace Conrad had an RBI single and scored in a three-run third as Louisiana-Lafayette defeated Mississippi State. Conrad finished with two hits and two runs for the Ragin’ Cajuns (57-8). Ryan Wilson (6-0, 6.2 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 4 BB, 2 K) earned the win, while Matt Plitt (2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K) recorded his fifth save. Brett Pirtle had three hits and one RBI for the Bulldogs (39-24).

 

Oxford Regional

#1 Ole Miss 3, #2 Washington 2 (10)

Ole Miss Wins Regional

 

Sikes Orvis had an RBI triple in the top of the 10th to lift Ole Miss over Washington. Colby Bortles (2 for 5, 2 RBI) homered, while Will Allen had two hits and two runs for the Rebels (44-18). Scott Weathersby (2-1) pitched 5.1 innings of scoreless relief with two hits, two walks and six strikeouts to record the victory. Chris Baker had two hits and a run for the Huskies (41-17-1).
