TCU Outlasts Sam Houston State in 22 Innings

UC Irvine knocks off No. 1 Oregon State, Kennesaw State stays unbeaten

Fort Worth Regional

#1 TCU 3, #3 Sam Houston State 2 (22)

#4 Siena 9, #2 Dallas Baptist 8 (10) (DBU eliminated)

Boomer White’s RBI single in the top of the 22nd inning scored Keaton Jones with the game-winning run as TCU edged Sam Houston State in the second-longest game in NCAA Tournament history.

While the single was the second extra-inning game-winner for White, it nearly didn’t happen because of a highly controversial call in the bottom of the 21st inning.

With Bearkats runners on first and third and one out, Travis Lee bounced to short, where Jones fielded and flipped to Garrett Crain at second as Luke Plucheck was bearing down from first. Crain caught the ball with his left leg in the sliding area, and Plucheck slid high and hard to break up the double play. Crain’s throw to first bounced beyond first base because of the hard contact, and the Bearkats bounded out of the dugout to celebrate. Plucheck was called for interference by second base umpire Jeff Head, resulting in an inning-ending double play and a pair of ejections for Plucheck and SHSU coach David Pierce. Head also called interference on the Bearkats in the first inning, negating two runs.

Sam Houston State (42-18) also nearly won the game in the 13th inning. Ryan O’Hearn lifted a ball over Cody Jones in center. Jones relayed to Jones at shortstop, who fired to catcher Kyle Bacak, who tagged Anthony Azar out at the plate.

Preston Morrison started for the Horned Frogs (44-15) and allowed three hits and two earned runs in 7.1 innings. Jason Simms allowed five hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts in seven innings for the Bearkats. For TCU, Trey Teakell allowed three hits in 6.1 innings, Brian Howard allowed one hit and struck out six in four innings and Brian Trieglaff (2-0) tossed 1.1 innings before Riley Ferrell earned his 14th save. Ryan Brinley allowed four hits and struck out six in 6.1 innings, and Dylan Ebbs (3-2) suffered the loss for the Bearkats in 2.2 innings.

White, who also had the game-winner against Siena on Friday night, went 2 for 9 with two RBI. O’Hearn was the only SHSU player with multiple hits, going 2 for 9.

The game lasted six hours and 54 minutes, and the 22 innings marked the second-longest game in NCAA Tournament history, three short of Texas and Boston College in 2009.

The Bearkats must turn around on short rest to face Siena, which won the first NCAA Tournament game in program history by rallying from a 7-0 deficit to beat Dallas Baptist in 10 innings. Vincent Citro plated the game-winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 10th as the Saints (27-32) eliminated the Patriots (40-21).

Citro finished 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI, and John Rooney and Dan Swain each added two hits and two RBI for Siena. Rooney’s two-run single in the seventh inning gave the Saints their first lead against Brandon Koch (8-1), who entered 8-0 with a 0.46 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 39.1 innings and came in to try to get out of a jam.

Neil Fryer allowed six hits and one run in nine innings of spectacular relief for Siena.

Mike Wesolowski, Austin Listi and Justin Wall each had two hits and two RBI for Dallas Baptist.

Kamplain (7-3) allowed five hits and one earned run in his eight splendid innings. Mikey White (2 for 4, 3 runs) homered, and Wass’ two-run shot came in a three-run seventh inning to make it 6-0 for the Crimson Tide (35-23).
