VCU wins in Atlantic 10, UNCW outlasts JMU in CAA, Clemson tops Duke

Andrew Lantrip (6-0) and Tyler Ford (fourth save) combined on a four-hitter, and Josh Vidales went 2 for 3 with two runs as Houston (42-14) topped Temple (14-31). Lantrip struck out seven in 5.2 innings, and the Cougars took advantage of four errors by the Owls. Matt Hockenberry (5-6) allowed eight hits and three unearned runs in a complete-game loss.

Zach Rodgers allowed five hits and struck out five in a complete-game win as UCF (35-22) knocked off Connecticut (26-30) in the day’s first game. Derrick Salberg and James Vasquez each drove in two runs for the Knights, who scored six runs in the second inning.

Vinny Zarrillo went 4 for 4 with two RBI, and Howie Brey allowed two hits in seven scoreless innings as Rutgers (30-23) beat USF (26-30) for its 11th win in 12 games. Brian O’Grady had a solo homer and RBI double in eight-run third inning, and R.J. Devish added two RBI for the Scarlet Knights.

Heath Dwyer allowed two earned runs over 6.1 innings, and Matt Davis drove in a pair of runs as VCU (35-18) slipped past Richmond (24-17-1) in the day’s first game. Logan Farrar went 3 for 4 with a run, and Chris Ayers and Bill Cullen contributed two hits apiece for the Rams. Ryan Cook went 2 for 4 with a run for the Spiders.

Daniel Thorpe improved to 10-1 as St. Joseph’s (34-15) opened up an 8-1 lead after five innings and went on to beat Fordham (23-29). Tommy Cunningham went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs and three RBI to lead the Hawks. Matthew Cianci went 3 for 5 with a run for the Rams.

Teddy Cillis delivered a two-out, RBI single to score Ryan LaGrange as UNC Wilmington (29-25) slipped past JMU (17-35) in the 10th inning. Drew Farber went 4 for 5 with a double, three runs and two RBI, and Andy Austin had three RBI for the Seahawks. Ty McFarland went 4 for 6 with three RBI and a run, and Brett Johnson drove in three for the Dukes, who scored seven runs the fifth inning in taking an 8-4 lead.

Dan Gatto tossed a complete game, and Delaware (25-25) rallied from a late 3-1 deficit to beat Northeastern (25-28). EJ Stoltzfus went 2 for 4 with an RBI double, and Ty Warrington delivered the go-ahead run in the eighth inning.

Nick Berger allowed four hits and struck out 10 as Northeastern (26-28) eliminated James Madison (17-36). Connor Lyons drove in two for the Huskies, who play again Thursday against a team TBD. Aaron Hoover allowed three unearned runs in a complete game for the Dukes.

Thomas Jankins scatted eight hits over eight scoreless innings, and Vincent Guglietti went 3 for 4 with an RBI as Quinnipiac (22-24) blanked Monmouth (18-29). Rob Pescitelli and Ryan Nelson each had two hits and an RBI for the Bobcats.

EJ Ashworth allowed five hits and two earned runs in a complete-game win, and Eric Fajardo scored from second on a wild pitch in the eighth inning as Fairfield (31-22) edged Manhattan (17-32). Joey Rocchietti allowed seven hits in a complete-game loss.

Jimmy Luppens went 3 for 5 with a homer and four RBI, and Anthony Massicci went 3 for 4 with three runs and three RBI as Canisius (39-14) rolled past Quinnipiac (18-30). Rohn Price (11-2) tossed five solid innings for the Golden Griffins. Matthew Batten went 3 for 4 for the Bobcats.

Ryan Peurifoy went 4 for 4 with three runs, and Brandon Gold had a two-out, RBI single in the top of the eighth as Georgia Tech (34-24) helped its NCAA Tournament cause by beating Miami (40-16), which is trying to capture a national seed. Arden Pabst joined Gold with two RBI, and Matt Gonzalez went 3 for 5 with an RBI for the Yellow Jackets. Dale Carey went 3 for 4 with a solo homer and two runs for the Hurricanes.

Matthew Crownover tossed 7.2 solid innings with nine strikeouts, and Tyler Krieger and Steven Duggar each contributed two hits and two RBI as Clemson (35-22), in need of wins to reach the NCAA Tournament, edged Duke (32-24). Ryan Deitrich went 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBI for the Blue Devils.

Billy Strode tossed six scoreless innings with five strikeouts, and Justin Gonzalez went 2 for 3 with a homer, two runs and two RBI as Florida State (42-14) coasted past North Carolina (33-24). Danny De La Calle added two RBI, and John Nogowski hit a solo homer for the Seminoles. Alex Raburn went 2 for 4 with an RBI for the Tar Heels.

Brennan Morgan’s grand slam in the bottom of the 10th inning – after Kennesaw State (34-21) rallied for three to force extras in the ninth inning – lifted the Owls to a stunning win over ETSU (26-29). Morgan went 4 for 4 with two runs and five RBI, and Bo Way went 4 for 4 with four runs and an RBI for Kennesaw State, which has won 20 of 21. Max Pentecost added three hits and three runs. Jeremy Taylor had two hits and three RBI, and Trey York added three hits and three runs for the Bucs.

Patrick Mazeika doubled in two runs in the top of the 10th inning to cap a three-hit, three-RBI day as Stetson (25-32) surprised Mercer (38-16). Tyler Warmoth tossed three solid innings of relief to pick up the win for the Hatters. Kyle Lewis had two hits and two RBI for the Bears.

Michael Murray picked up his 13th win of the year with 6.1 solid innings, and Nick Rivera drove in two runs as FGCU (37-20) slipped past North Florida (22-30). Trent Higginbothem and Corbin Olmstead each had two hits and an RBI for UNF.

All games Wednesday were postponed because of an issue with the sprinklers made Winthrop Ballpark unplayable. The tournament will resume Thursday.

Michael Pierson lifted a homer off the right-field foul pole in the top of the 11th as Appalachian State (21-32) knocked off Georgia Southern (34-21). Dillon Dobson had a two-out, RBI single for the Mountaineers in the top of the ninth inning to force extra innings. Stryker Brown had a solo homer for the Eagles.

Matt Solter allowed one earned run in seven solid innings, and Greg Harrison had two hits and two RBI as Furman (25-31) surprised regular-season champ Western Carolina (37-17). Hunter Barton scored twice for the Paladins, who took a 3-0 lead to the eighth inning before the Catamounts tried to rally. Bradley Strong went 3 for 5 and drove in a run for WCU.

Sam Foy drove in three, and Lee Miller added a two-run homer as Davidson (29-17) held off The Citadel (24-33). Danny Mooney worked six innings with six runs (three earned) and Mike Goldberg posted his eighth save for the Wildcats, who overcame five errors. Bret Hines went 3 for 5 with a run and RBI for the Bulldogs.

Michael Strentz drove in two runs on the day, and Louisiana-Lafayette (50-7) scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away from UL Monroe (22-35). Kyle Clement had two hits and two runs, and Austin Robichaux tossed seven solid innings for the Ragin’ Cajuns. Ross Moore drove in three for the Warhawks.

Cody Lovejoy had a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th after Texas State (29-26) scored three times in the ninth to force extra innings in edging Western Kentucky (29-27). Granger Studdard scored twice and Austin O’Neal had two of Texas State’s six hits. Justin Hageman allowed three hits and four walks and struck out six in eight innings for the Hilltoppers, who led 3-0 entering the ninth.

Kyle Brennan hit a home run in the fifth to lead Buffalo past Miami. Brennan went 2 for 4 with two runs, while Kevin Hughes (5-5, 8.1 IP, 9 H, 5 R, BB, 6 SO) earned the win and Mike Kaelin retired the final two batters for his first save for the Bulls (26-29). Ryan Elble went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI for the RedHawks (29-26).

 

Zarley Zalewski hit a two-run triple to spark a five-run fourth as Kent State downed Bowling Green. Brian Clark (8.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 SO) earned the win for the Golden Flashes (33-21). Logan Walker had the only RBI for the Falcons (25-26) while Patrick Lancaster went 2 for 3 with a walk.

 

Sean Godfrey had a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh as Ball State outlaster Western Michigan. Godfrey finished with two hits and three RBI, while Jarett Rindfleisch went 2 for 4 with a home run for the Cardinals (39-16). Brett Sunde went 2 for 4 with the only RBI for the Broncos (22-29). Zach Plesac (4 IP, 4 H, 4, SO) earned the win and raised his record to 12-2.

 

Daulton Mosbarger went 3 for 4 with a homer, while Matt Larocca was 2 for 3 with a dinger, two runs and two RBI as Akron surprised Central Michigan. The Zips (26-28) scored three in the top of the first and built a 5-0 lead after three. Pat Dyer (4-4, 5 IP, 6 H, 2 UE, 3 BB, 3 K) picked up the win, while Larocca (2 IP, H, 3 K) recorded his sixth save. Tyler Huntey went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a run for the Chippewas (35-22).

 

OVC Tournament (The Ballpark at Jackson, Jackson, Tenn.)

Bobby Burns went 4 for 6 with a double and three RBI to lead Morehead State to victory against SIUE. Brandon Rawe went 3 for 6 with two RBI for MSU. Luke Humphreys (5 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 2 SO) earned the win for the Eagles (29-26) and Matt Ellenbest (4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, BB) recorded his second save. Nick Lombardo went 1 for 5 with a triple in the third inning to score three for the Cougars (21-32).

 

Matt Borens (6-4) struck out 11 in 8.2 innings as Eastern Illinois edged Jacksonville State. Borens allowed two hits, one walk and one unearned run. Troy Barton fanned the final hitter for his eighth save. Dane Sauer scored both runs for the Panthers (22-31-1). Paschal Petrongolo had an RBI double in the ninth for the Gamecocks (30-25).
