North Carolina edges Florida State in Chapel Hill

Cal nips Gonzaga in 12, Utah gets past Kansas in 13, Columbia wins

 

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Brian Holberton had a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to snap a 3-3 tie and propel fifth-ranked North Carolina past No. 7 Florida State 4-3 Monday in a non-conference contest at Boshamer Stadium. Cody Stubbs (2 for 4, 3B, 2 R) struck out with two down in the eighth, but reached first on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a base hit by Michael Russell (2 for 3, 2 RBI) before coming home on the single by Holberton. Trent Thornton (9-1, 2.1 IP, BB, 3 K) earned the victory for the Tar Heels (48-8). John Sansone went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI, while Jose Brizuela was 2 for 4 with a triple and a run for the Seminoles (44-12).

 

California 3, Gonzaga 2 (12)

In Berkeley, Calif., Mitchell Kranson delivered a run-scoring single in the bottom of the 12th as California edged Gonzaga in its season-ending contest. John Soteropulos had a leadoff double in the 12th and was sacrificed to third before coming home on the base hit by Kranson (3 for 6). Cory Lebrum had an RBI double in the top of the 10th as the Bulldogs (32-19-1) took a 2-1 lead. Devin Pearson had a one-out single in the bottom of the frame and scored the tying run on a wild pitch for the Golden Bears (23-31). Jake Schulz (1-2, 1.2 IP, 3 BB, 3 K) picked up the win. Steven Halcomb had two hits and a run for the Zags.

 

Utah 7, Kansas 6 (13)

In Salt Lake City, Cory Hunt had an RBI base hit with two away in the bottom of the 13th as Utah nipped Kansas at Spring Mobile Ballpark. The Utes (20-29) had scored a pair in the bottom of the ninth to force the extra frames. Braden Anderson went 1 for 4 with two RBI, while Tyler Relf had three hits and a run for Utah. Luke West (4-2, 4 IP, 5 H, 3 K) earned the victory. Alex DeLeon went 2 for 5 with a homer, two runs and two RBI for the Jayhawks (31-24).

 

Columbia 9, Sacred Heart 2

In New York, Columbia scored seven over its final two at-bats to get past Sacred Heart, extending its win streak to seven and halting the 12-game win streak by the Pioneers. Jordan Serena (2 for 4, 2 R), Joey Falcone (1 for 4, 2B) and Aaron Silbar (1 for 4, R) each drove in two, while David Vandercook (2 for 2, 2B, 3 BB, RBI) scored twice for the Lions (27-19). Zack Tax (4-1, 2 IP, H, BB, K) was credited with the win. Murphy had two hits for Sacred Heart (32-22).

 

Washington State 1, Portland 0

In Pasco, Wash., Adam Nelubowich drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the eighth for the game’s lone run as Washington State edged Portland. Richie Ochoa (2-0) retired the final batter in the top of the eighth to record the victory for the Cougars (22-30). J.D. Leckenby retired the Pilots (18-36) in order in the ninth with a strikeout to earn his sixth save. Nick Armenta had two hits for Portland.
