Vavra had three hits and four runs in Valparaiso win

San Francisco downs San Diego State, Northeastern wins Beanpot Classic

 

In Valparaiso, Ind., Tanner Vavra (left) went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four runs as Valparaiso downed Goshen 11-4 Monday at Emory G. Bauer Field. The Crusaders (19-23) used a three-run fifth to snap a 4-4 deadlock and added one in the seventh and three in the eighth. John Loeffler (2 for 3, 2B, 3B, 2 RBI) scored three, Chris Manning (1 for 2, BB, R) drove in three, and Andrew Bynum went 3 for 3 with two walks and two RBI. Ryan Kennedy (1-1, 1.1 IP, BB, K) earned the win in relief. Benjamin Kelly walked twice and scored for the Maple Leafs (4-40).

 

San Francisco 8, San Diego State 2

In San Diego, Justin Maffei went 3 for 4 with a double and three runs as San Francisco defeated San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Dons (25-19) scored in each of the first four innings, including five in the third. Bradley Zimmer and Bob Cruikshank both drove in a pair for USF. Abe Bobb (3-5, 5.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 5 K) earned the victory, with Andrew Pulido (3.2 IP, BB, 3 K) recording his second save. Greg Allen had three hits and one RBI for the Aztecs (22-22).

 

Beanpot Classic

Championship Game: Northeastern 6, Massachusetts 3

Consolation Game: Boston College 7, Harvard 2

In Boston, Rob Fonseca homered to spark a four-run fourth as Northeastern defeated Massachusetts in front of 1,563 fans at Fenway Park to win the 23rd annual Beanpot championship. Fonseca had two hits, including a double, and two runs for the Huskies (24-17). Pete Castoldi drove in a pair and Michael Foster walked twice with two runs for NU. Matt Cook (2-0, 4 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 2 K) earned the win in relief, while Foster (2 IP, 3 H, R, BB, 5 K) notched his first save. Rob McLam had three hits and two runs for the Minutemen (10-25).

 

In the first contest, Joe Cronin had three hits and a run to lead Boston College past Harvard. The Eagles (9-35) scored in six different innings, including two in the sixth. Matt McGovern (1 for 3, 2B, 2 BB, R) drove in a pair for BC. Steve Green (1-0, 5 IP, 5 H, R, BB, 4 K) was the starter and winner. Carlton Bailey had three hits and Mike Martin added two hits for the Crimson (10-31).
