LSU uses six-run sixth to deep-six Tulane

SJSU knocks off Stanford, Texas A&M blanks SHSU, Oregon nips Gonzaga

 

In Baton Rouge, La., fourth-ranked LSU used a six-run sixth to blow open a tight game in defeating Tulane 9-5 Tuesday in front of 5,464 fans at Alex Box Stadium. The Tigers (36-10) led 3-2 after five before the sixth-inning outburst. Austin Nola went 2 for 5 with a homer, two runs and two RBI, while Raph Rhymes added two hits and two runs for LSU. Brent Bonvillain (4-0, 1 IP, 2 H, 1 UE, 1 BB, 2 K) got the win in relief. Nick Schneeberger and Bowen Woodson both had three hits and one RBI for the Green Wave (29-16).

 

San Jose State 8, No. 8 Stanford 5

In San Jose, Calif., Andrew Rodriguez snapped a 4-4 tie with a two-run homer which sparked a four-run fourth as San Jose registered its first season sweep of Stanford since 1995. Rodriguez finished with two hits and two runs, while Michael Gerlach had two hits, including a double, and two RBI for the Spartans (21-19). Kyle Hassna (2-1, 2 IP, 2 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 2 K) got the win in relief, while Kalei Contrades (1 IP, 2 H, 2 K) recorded his third save. Austin Wilson (2 for 2, 3 RBI) homered twice and Jake Stewart (1 for 3, 2 RBI) also went deep for the Cardinal (28-12),

 

No. 9 Texas A&M 10, Sam Houston State 0

In Huntsville, Texas, Daniel Mengden and two relievers combined on the shutout as Texas A&M blanked Sam Houston State in front of 2,036 fans at Sanders Stadium. Mengden (1-3) allowed six hits in seven innings with no walks and four strikeouts. Corey Ray struck out two in the eighth and Parker Ray fanned a pair in the ninth to complete the shutout. The Aggies (32-13) scored in each of their final at-bats, including four in the fifth. Tyler Naquin went 2 for 5 with two runs and three RBI, while Mikey Reynolds was 4 for 4 with a run for Texas A&M. Greg Olson had two hits for the Bearkats (31-14).

 

No. 10 Oregon 3, Gonzaga 2

In Spokane, Wash., Kyle Garlick had a two-run homer to help Oregon rally past Gonzaga at the Patterson Baseball Complex. The Bulldogs (27-15) led 2-0 after five before the two-run bomb by Garlick in the sixth knotted the score. Aaron Payne had a squeeze bunt an inning later to plate the eventual game-winner for the Ducks (31-13). Jordan Spencer (3-2, 6 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 4 K) earned the win, while Jimmie Sherfy allowed a hit and a walk but struck out two in a scoreless ninth to record his 11th save. Royce Bolinger went 3 for 5, while Clayton Eslick and Alex Stanford both had two hits and a run for Gonzaga.

 

No. 14 UCLA 2, Long Beach State 1

In Long Beach, Calif., Grant Watson allowed two hits in six scoreless innings as UCLA edged Long Beach State in front of 1,342 fans at Blair Field. Watson (8-1) walked one and struck out three. Scott Griggs walked two and fanned the final two hitters in the ninth for his 10th save. Trevor Brown had two hits and drove in both runs for the Bruins (29-12). Brown had a RBI double in the top of the fourth and a run-scoring single in the eighth as UCLA took a 2-0 advantage. Richard Prigatano singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Robert Vickers in the bottom of the eighth for the Dirtbags (21-21).

 

No. 15 Cal State Fullerton 4, USC 2

In Fullerton, Calif., Michael Lorenzen had three extra-base hits and a save as Cal State Fullerton downed USC in front of 2,020 fans at Goodwin Field. Lorenzen had two doubles and a triple for the Titans (27-14). He doubled and scored the go-ahead run in a two-run fifth and added a two-run triple in the sixth as Fullerton took a 4-1 lead. Koby Gauna (4-3, 2.1 IP, 2 H) earned the win in relief. Lorenzen pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout for his 13th save. Richy Pedroza went 2 for 3 with two walks and one run for the Titans. James Roberts went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI for the Trojans (22-18).

 

No. 16 Arkansas 6, Missouri 3

In Fayetteville, Ark., Derrick Bleeker had three extra-base hits, drove in two and scored twice to lead Arkansas past Missouri in front of 4,245 fans at Baum Stadium. Bleeker had two doubles and  a two-run triple in a four-run third for the Razorbacks (32-13). Nolan Sanburn (3-1, 4 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 7 K) picked up the win. Case Munson had a pinch-hit double and scored for the Tigers (23-20).

 

Western Kentucky 8, No. 19 Louisville 1

In Bowling Green, Ky., Western Kentucky scored four in the sixth and three in the seventh to down Louisville in front of 2,323 fans at Bowling Green Ballpark. Steve Hodgins (2 for 4, 3 RBI) had a two-run single to highlight the four-run sixth, while Casey Dykes (2 for 3, 2 R, 2 RBI) had a RBI double in the seventh for the Hilltoppers (19-26). Ryan Huck went 3 for 4 with two runs, while Jared Andreoli went 2 for 4 with two runs for WKU. Ian Tompkins (3-2, 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 4 BB, 2 K) registered the win. Shane Crain went 2 for 3 with a double and a run for the Cardinals (31-14).

 

Utah Valley 14, BYU 11

In Orem, Utah, Goose Kallunki had a three-run homer and drove in four as Utah Valley outscored BYU to extend its win streak to 24 in front of a record crowd of 5,456 fans at Brent Brown Ballpark. The Wolverines (31-11) trailed 10-8 before a four-run fifth put the home team ahead to stay. Billy Burgess went 4 for 5 with a triple, three runs and one RBI, while Sean Moysh went 2 for 3 with three runs and three RBI for UVU. Taylor Mangum (3.1 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 3 K) got the win in relief, while Jeff Barto (1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 UE, 3 K) registered his first save. Alex Wolfe (2 for 4, 3 R) and Kelton Caldwell (2 for 5, 2 R, 3 RBI) both homered, while Adam Law added four hits and three RBI for the Cougars (18-18).

 

TCU 4, Oklahoma 3

In Fort Worth, Texas, Derek Odell had a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth as TCU rallied past Oklahoma in front of 4,252 spectators at Lupton Stadium. Max White had a two-run triple and scored in the fourth as the Sooners (29-17) took a 2-1 advantage. Odell (2 for 2) had a single to spark a two-run rally in the eighth as the Horned Frogs (27-15) tied it at 3. TCU took advantage of two OU errors in the ninth as Odell’s base hit plated Brance Rivera with the game-winner. Kevin Allen (1 IP, 1 H, 2 K) registered the victory. Caleb Bushyhead went 3 for 4 with a run for the Sooners.

 

Kansas 16, UALR 12

In Little Rock, Ark., Alex DeLeon and Michael Suiter both belted three-run homers in the eighth as Kansas outscored UALR at Gary Hogan Field. The Jayhawks (18-27) had a 10-9 lead after seven before DeLeon (2 for 5, 2 R, 4 RBI) and Suiter (2 for 5, 5 RBI) added some insurance runs. Jordan Dreiling went 4 for 6 with three RBI, while Connor McKay (2 for 6, 2 R) went deep for Kansas. Jordan Jakubov (1-1, 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K) earned the win in relief. Nick Rountree went 4 for 5 with two homers, a double, three runs and six RBI for the Trojans (22-22).
