Pigott powers Florida past Georgia to win SEC series

Kentucky nips LSU, Baylor sweeps Texas A&M, East Carolina edges Rice

 

In Gainesville, Fla., Daniel Pigott had a three-run homer to snap a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth as second-ranked Florida defeated Georgia 6-3 Sunday to capture the SEC series in front of 4,492 fans at McKethan Stadium. Pigott went 3 for 3 with a double and four RBI, while Mike Zunino (pictured left) went 2 for 4 with a homer and two runs for the Gators (11-7, 31-9). Karsten Whitson (2-0, 0.2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB) received the win, while Austin Maddox struck out one in a perfect ninth for his 11th save. Levi Hyams went 1 for 4 with a double, one run and one RBI for the Bulldogs (8-10, 24-17).

 

No. 3 Kentucky 7, No. 4 LSU 6

In Lexington, Ky., Kentucky erased a 5-4 deficit with a three-run sixth in winning its SEC series against visiting LSU in front of 3,086 fans at Cliff Hagan Stadium. A.J. Reed doubled and drove in two, Austin Cousino went 3 for 5 with a double, one run and one RBI, while Zac Zellers was 2 for 3 with a double, a homer and two runs for the Wildcats (13-5, 35-6). Tim Peterson (3-0, 1.1 IP, 1 BB) got the win in relief, while Alex Phillips (2 IP, 2 H, 1 UE) recorded his fourth save. Raph Rhymes went 4 for 4 for the Tigers (12-6, 32-9) with a double, a homer, two runs and three RBI. Mason Katz was 3 for 4 with three runs for LSU.

 

No. 6 Baylor 7, No. 5 Texas A&M 5

In Waco, Texas, Baylor erased a 5-4 deficit with two in the sixth to complete a Big 12 sweep of Texas A&M in front of 4,887 fans at Baylor Ballpark to extend its win streak to 24. Josh Ludy went 2 for 4 with a double, a homer, two runs and two RBI, while Max Muncy and Dan Evatt both drove in a pair for the Bears (18-0, 35-7). Nathan Orf and Logan Vick both had two hits and two runs for Baylor. Ryan Smith (2-0, 2.2 IP, 2 H, 2 K) earned the win in relief, while Max Garner got the final two outs for his eighth save. Tyler Naquin went 4 for 5 with a double, three runs and one RBI for the Aggies (9-6, 28-12).

 

Oregon State 7, No. 8 UCLA 6

In Corvallis, Ore., Ryan Gorton had a two-run single in the seventh to give Oregon State the lead for good as it won its Pac-12 series over UCLA at Goss Stadium. Gorton (1 for 4, 3 RBI) snapped a 4-4 tie with his base hit and pinch-runner Ryan Dettman scored later in the frame on a passed ball to give the Beavers (8-7, 26-12) a 7-4 advantage. The Bruins (11-7, 26-10) tallied two in the top of the ninth and had the tying run in scoring position when the game ended. John Tommasini went 2 for 3 and Tyler Smith scored twice for OSU. Tony Bryant (4-1, 2.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 K) took the win. Cody Regis went 3 for 4 with a homer, three runs and three RBI for UCLA.

 

No. 9 South Carolina 11, Auburn 7

In Auburn, Ala., Erik Payne had a three-run homer in a four-run first as South Carolina completed a SEC sweep of Auburn in front of 2,747 fans at Plainsman Park. Payne finished with four RBI, while L.B. Dantzler (3 for 5, 2B, 3 R, 2 RBI) also homered for the Gamecocks (11-7, 30-11). Tanner English went 4 for 5 with one run and one RBI for South Carolina. Colby Holmes (6-0, 5 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 2 BB, 7 K) picked up the win. Kody Ortman went 4 for 5 with a double and three RBI, while Creede Simpson homered and knocked in two for the Tigers (7-11, 21-19).

 

Washington State 10, No. 10 Oregon 6

In Eugene, Ore., Taylor Ard homered twice and had five RBI to lead Washington State over Oregon. The Cougars (7-7, 20-16) won the Pac-12 series with the win over the Ducks (11-7, 27-12) and won their first road series this year. Jeff Gold (5-3) picked up the loss after giving up seven runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings. Tanner Chledborad (3-0) earned the win after allowing only two runs on five hits in 5.2 innings. Patrick Claussen was 3 for 5 with two doubles and two RBI for WSU. Brett Thomas went 2 for 3 with two RBI for the Ducks.

 

East Carolina 4, No. 11 Rice 3

In Houston, Jharel Cotton allowed two runs in 6.1 innings as East Carolina avoided the Conference USA sweep against Rice in front of 3,572 fans at Reckling Park. Cotton (7-0) scattered nine hits, did not walk a batter and struck out five. Drew Reynolds pitched a scoreless ninth to register his eighth save. The Pirates (9-5-1, 27-13-1) scored three in the fourth and one in the fifth to build a 4-1 lead. John Wooten went 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI for ECU. Christian Stringer was 4 for 5 for the Owls (11-4, 30-12) with a double, one run and two RBI.

 

No. 12 Stanford 9, Arizona State 5

In Stanford, Calif., Austin Wilson gave Stanford the lead in the fifth and made a game-saving catch in the eighth in its win over Arizona State. The Cardinal (8-7, 25-10) with the sweep over the Sun Devils (9-9, 24-16) launched themselves into the middle of the Pac-12 race. Dean McArdle (3-0) picked up the win in relief after giving up one run on one hit over two innings. Alex Blackford (1-3) took the loss after surrendering three runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. Stephen Piscotty (1 for 3, 2 R) and Brian Ragira (1 for 4) both drove in two for Stanford. James McDonald led the Sun Devils with a 3-for-4 performance with three RBI.

 

No. 13 UCF 8, Tulane 6

In New Orleans, Chris Taladay had three doubles and drove in four to lead UCF to a Conference USA series sweep of Tulane in front of 2,610 fans at Turchin Stadium. The Knights (12-3, 34-8) scored in three of the first five innings in building a 6-0 lead. Travis Shreve went 3 for 4 with a run, while Darnell Sweeney had two hits, including a double, and two runs for UCF. Ray Hanson (4-1, 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 2 K) picked up the victory, while Roman Madrid worked around a walk in a scoreless ninth for his third save. Bowen Woodson went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and one RBI for the Green Wave (5-7, 26-14).

 

Washington 6, No. 14 Arizona 5 (12)

In Seattle, Branden Berry's two-out single in the bottom of the 12th gave Washington the victory over Arizona. The Huskies (6-9, 20-17) had scored three runs in the eighth to take the lead but the Wildcats (12-6, 26-13) came back with a run in the ninth to force extra innings. Tyler Kane (3-1) received the win after throwing a scoreless last inning. Stephen Manthei (5-4) picked up the loss after giving up one run on six hits in 4.1 innings of relief. Chase Anselment drove in three, while Jacob Lamb scored three for Washington. Johnny Field went 1 for 4 with two RBI for the Wildcats.

 

No. 16 Cal State Fullerton 5, Cal Poly 4 (10)

In Fullerton, Calif., Carlos Lopez doubled to score Ivory Thomas in the bottom of the 10th to give the Titans the win over Cal Poly. The Titans (9-3, 26-13) kept a tie for first place in the Big West after the victory over the Mustangs (6-6, 22-16). Lopez finished with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and two RBI. Michael Lorenzen (2-0) picked up the win in relief after giving up two runs in two innings. Nick Grim (2-2) took the loss for Cal Poly after giving up two runs on four hits in 1.1 innings. David Armendariz had two doubles and two runs for the Mustangs.

 

No. 17 Arkansas 11, Ole Miss 3

In Oxford, Miss., Dominic Ficociello had three hits and four RBI, and Jake Wise had three hits and two RBI as Arkansas pounded out a season-best 18 hits in salvaging the third game of its SEC series with Ole Miss. Tim Carver added three hits and a RBI, and Bo Bigham, Derrick Bleeker and Jacob Mahan each contributed two hits and a RBI as every Razorbacks starter had at least one hit and six had multiple hits. Cade Lynch (2-1) earned the win with three innings of relief of DJ Baxendale, who allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings for Arkansas (9-9, 28-12). Alex Yarbrough capped a monster weekend with a 3-for-4 day for the Rebels (9-9, 27-13).

 

No. 18 Purdue 8, Nebraska 3

In Lincoln, Neb., CBI journalist David Miller had a three-run homer in a four-run fourth as first-place Purdue downed Nebraska to win the Big Ten series in front of 6,014 fans at Hawks Field. The Boilermakers (12-3, 31-6) scored single runs in the first two innings before the four-run outburst in the fourth pushed the lead to 6-0. Cameron Perkins went 2 for 4 with two RBI, while Barrett Serrato went 2 for 4 with a double, a homer and two runs for Purdue. Connor Podkul (2-0, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 1 K) picked up the victory, while Nick Wittgren (3.2 IP, 3 H, 3 K) notched his eighth save. Richard Stock went 3 for 4 with two doubles and one RBI, while Josh Scheffert drove in a pair for the Huskers (8-7, 26-15).

 

No. 19 San Diego 7, Saint Mary’s 3

In San Diego, Kris Bryan went 3 for 5 with a double, homer and four RBI to spark a 16-hit attack as San Diego claimed its West Coast Conference series over Saint Mary’s. Paul Sewald (6-1) worked six innings with one earned run, two hits and five strikeouts for the first-place Toreros (9-3, 31-9). Julian Duran contributed two hits and two RBI, and Corey LeVier went 3 for 4 for San Diego, which used a four-run fourth inning to take control. Collin Ferguson went 2 for 4 with a RBI for the Gaels (3-9, 18-19).

 

Southeast Missouri 3, Tennessee Tech 1

In Cape Girardeau, Mo., Dylan Lynn pitched a complete game as Southeast Missouri defeated Tennessee Tech to win its first OVC series. Lynn (3-0) allowed six hits and one earned run with two walks and eight strikeouts. Kenton Parmley went 0 for 3 and saw his hit streak end at 47, tied for third in the history of NCAA Division I. Derek Gibson tripled and scored for the Redhawks (5-10, 14-27). Chad Hayes went 1 for 4 and drove in the lone run for the Golden Eagles (7-8, 17-22).

 

Wichita State 3, Missouri State 2

In Wichita, Kan., Kris Gardner tossed seven scoreless innings as Wichita State salvaged the finale of its MVC series with first-place Missouri State in front of 3,227 fans at Eck Stadium. Gardner (4-1) allowed five hits with no walks and four strikeouts. After the Bears (8-3, 29-12) scored a pair in the eighth, Cale Elam struck out the side in the ninth for his eighth save. Mikel Mucha went 3 for 4 with one run, while Erik Harbutz was 2 for 4 with a run for the Shockers (6-6, 24-19). Luke Voit went 2 for 4 with one RBI, while Keenen Maddox had two hits, including a double, for Missouri State.

 

UC Riverside 8, UC Davis 0

In Riverside, Calif., Trevor Frank tossed a three-hit shutout as UC Riverside blanked UC Davis to win the Big West series. Frank entered the game with a 0-5 record and an ERA of 4.57. He had posted a win in more than a year. Frank (1-5) did not walk a batter and struck out four. Alex Rubanowitz went 3 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI, while Kyle Boudreau (2 for 3, R) and Phil Holinsworth both drove in two for the Highlanders (4-5, 14-19). Nick Lynch went 1 for 4 with a double for the Aggies (3-6, 14-21).

 

UNC Wilmington 10, Northeastern 2

In Brookline, Mass., Thomas Pope went 3 for 5 with a homer, two runs and four RBI as first-place UNC Wilmington completed a CAA sweep at Northeastern. The Seahawks (15-3, 24-16) erased a 2-1 deficit with three in the sixth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth. Andrew Cain went 2 for 4 with a double, three runs and three RBI, while Hunter Ridge drove in a pair for UNCW. Jordan Ramsey (3-2, 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 5 K) got the win, while Ricky Holden (3 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 K) earned his second save. Jason Vosler had two hits and one run for the Huskies (4-14, 14-21).
