Gyorko leads West Virginia past Purdue

Holy Cross wins at Georgia Southern, Kansas State wins in 11 innings

 

In Clearwater, Fla., Jedd Gyorko (right) went 4 for 5, including his 200th career hit, as West Virginia outscored Purdue 18-14 Monday at Jack Russell Stadium. Gyorko had two doubles, one homer and three RBI for the Mountaineers (2-5). WVU scored eight in the third to erase a 3-0 deficit. Matt Frazier (3 for 5, 2 R, 3 RBI) and Dom Hayes (2 for 5, 3 R) also had big days at the plate for the Mountaineers. Tyler Spillner went 3 for 4 with two runs and one RBI for the Boilermakers (0-4). Payton Bieker was 3 for 3 off the bench for Purdue.

 

Holy Cross 3, Georgia Southern 2

In Statesboro, Ga., Nate Koneski and Ryan George combined on a three-hitter as Holy Cross edged Georgia Southern at J.I Clements Stadium. Koneski (1-0) allowed two runs on three hits in 7.2 innings to earn the victory for the Crusaders (1-2). After allowing a two-run homer to Kyle Blackburn in the first, Koneski retired 22 of the next 25 he faced, including 15 straight at one point. George worked the final 1.1 innings to notch the save. Chris Sintetos had a sacrifice fly in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and plate the game-winner. Shawn Payne had two hits for the Eagles (3-5).

 

Kansas State 14, St. Bonaventure 7 (11)

In Winter Haven, Fla., Kansas State exploded for nine runs in the top of the 11th in outlasting St. Bonaventure in the RussMatt Invitational at Chain of Lakes Park. Kent Urban’s two-run single with two outs was the big blow in the 11th for the Wildcats (5-1). Adam Muenster (3 for 3, 3 R, 1 RBI), Carter Jurica (2 for 6, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Nick Martini (3 for 7, 1 R, 2 RBI) paced the offense for KSU. Jesse Bosnick went 4 for 6 with two hits and one RBI for the Bonnies (0-3).

 

Illinois State 7, Western Michigan 3

In Auburndale, Fla., Zach Amrein smacked a two-run homer in the first to spark Illinois State past Western Michigan in the RussMatt Invitational at Lake Myrtle Park. Amrein finished with two hits and three RBI. Kevin Tokarski (3 for 5, 1 R, 2 RBI), Ryan Court (3 for 4, 1 R) and Evan Kohli (2 for 4, 1 HR, 2 RBI) joined Amrein in the offensive explosion. Ryan Camp (1-1) allowed four hits in seven innings with six strikeouts for the Redbirds (4-2). Troy Forton had one hit and two runs for the Broncos (0-4).

 

Rider 4-7, Maryland-Eastern Shore 1-0

In Princess Anne, Md., Rider starters Joe Cologero and Patrick Devlin held UMES to one run in a doubleheader and series sweep at Hawks Stadium. Cologero (1-0) went eight innings in his collegiate debut in the opener with six hits and one run. Devlin (1-0) allowed three hits in four innings in the nightcap with five strikeouts. Neither starter allowed a walk. A.J. Albee 4 for 9 in the two games for the Broncs (4-0) with two runs and two RBI. Elliott Alston had three hits on the day for the Hawks (0-8).

 

Longwood 11-14, Coppin State 10-5

In Farmville, Va., Phil Cerreto went 3 for 4 with a grand slam in the opener as Longwood swept a doubleheader from Coppin State at Bolding Stadium. Justin Lacy hit a two-run homer in the second and Cerreto’s slam came in the third for the Lancers (5-0). Derek Richards went 3 for 4 with two doubles and four RBI for the Eagles (0-5). Robby Newman had two hits and three RBI in the nightcap for Longwood, including a two-run homer in the fourth. Robbie Bailey also went deep for the Lancers. Dwight Robinson had three hits and one RBI in Game 2 for Coppin State.

 

Northeastern 8, Western Michigan 5

In Auburndale, Fla., Logan Gilles and Jon Leroux both had two-run doubles as Northeastern topped Western Michigan at the RussMatt Invitational. Tony DeCesare had three hits and two runs for the Huskies (3-1). Jack Scanlon had three hits and Tim Cross drove in two for the Broncos (0-5).

 

Villanova 9, Duquesne 6

In Winter Haven, Fla., Kevin Stephens had a two-run single in a three-run seventh as Villanova defeated Duquesne at the RussMatt Invitational at Chain of Lakes Park. Chris Johnson and Kevin Wager each knocked in two for the Wildcats (6-1). Rick Devereaux had three hits, two runs and two RBI for the Dukes (0-6).

 

Nevada 5, UC Davis 3

In Davis, Calif., Nevada scored single runs in each of the final four innings as Nevada defeated UC Davis at Dobbins Stadium. Nick Leid had a sacrifice fly in the seventh to tie the game at 3-3 for the Wolf Pack (5-3). Kevin Rodland had an RBI double in the eighth and Leid added a run-scoring single in the ninth for Nevada. Daniel Cepin had one hit and two runs for the Aggies (4-4).

 

Cal State Northridge 9, Waseda University (Japan) 4

In Northridge, Calif., Dominic D’Anna had a pinch-hit run-scoring single to highlight a five-run eighth as Cal State Northridge defeated Waseda in an exhibition game at Matador Field. Tommy Simis had three hits and three RBI for the Matadors. Koki Sasaki had three hits for Waseda.
