Ackley homers in 12th to lift UNC over Longwood

Jordan earns 300th SoCon win for The Citadel, Krizan hits for cycle for DBU

 

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Dustin Ackley homered twice, including the game-winner in the bottom of the 12th, as second-ranked North Carolina outlasted Longwood 5-4 Thursday evening at Boshamer Stadium. Ackley had three hits and knocked in four of the five runs for the Tar Heels (37-11). Brant Jones had a two-run single to cap a three-run second for the Lancers (25-18). Longwood added one in the third before Ackley’s two-run blast in the bottom of the frame made it 4-2. Mark Fleury went deep in the fourth and Ackley tied it with an RBI single in the fifth. Garrett Gore had two hits for UNC. Casey Havers had three hits for the Lancers.

 

The Citadel 3, Furman 1

In Greenville, S.C., Wes Wrenn went the distance as The Citadel won the opener of its Southern Conference series against Furman at Latham Stadium. Wrenn (8-2) allowed one run on seven hits with five strikeouts. Richard Jones and Chris McGuiness had consecutive homers in the sixth to give the Bulldogs (15-10, 29-19) a two-run lead. The Paladins (9-16, 21-24) got an RBI single by Matt Hemingway in the third before Bryan Altman doubled and scored for The Citadel in the fourth. Bulldog skipper Fred Jordan became the first coach in the 88-year history of the SoCon to win 300 conference contests.

 

Dallas Baptist 15, Utah Valley 14

In Dallas, Ryan Enos hit a game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth as DBU nipped UVU at Patriot Field. Jason Krizan hit for the cycle and knocked in five for the Patriots (33-14). Ryan Thompson had a run-scoring single for DBU in the eighth that tied the game before Enos ended it in the ninth. Thompson finished with three hits, two steals and two RBI. Chris Benson had three hits and four RBI for the Wolverines (16-31). Ryan Jones had four hits, two runs and two RBI for UVU.

 

Georgia State 14, Atlanta Christian 9

In Atlanta, Joey Wood’s three-run homer in the seventh gave Georgia State the lead for good in its home win over Atlanta Christian. The Panthers (31-18) trailed 8-7 before Wood’s blast put GSU up two. Derek Simmons followed with a dinger to make it 11-8. The Chargers (28-22) got one back in the top of the eighth before Marc Mimeault’s three-run shot completed the scoring. Carl Moniz also drove in three for the Panthers. Jeff Mitchell (3 for 5, 1 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI) and Jeremy Capshaw (3 for 5, 2 R, 3 RBI) led the offense for ACC.

 

USC Upstate 10, Charleston Southern 3

In Spartanburg, S.C., Austin Moyer fanned seven in seven innings as USC Upstate defeated Charleston Southern at Cleveland S. Harley Baseball Park. Moyer (3-6) allowed five hits and one run. Eric Guillen tripled and scored in the first, and had a three-run double to cap a four-run second as the Spartans (13-33) built a 5-0 lead. Derek Smith had a two-run homer in the eighth for the Buccaneers (15-32). Tyler Thornburg had two hits for CSU.

 

BYU 15, UNLV 12

In Provo, Utah, Chad Nacapoy homered and drove in five as BYU outscored UNLV in the opener of their Mountain West series at Larry H. Miller Field. Jordan Muir picked up his 10th save for the Cougars (12-8, 25-21), going 2.2 scoreless innings with one hit and two strikeouts. The Rebels (9-10, 25-25) scored three in the second before BYU took control with eight in the bottom of the frame. Sean McNaughton had three hits and three runs for the Cougars. J.J. Sferra and Jesse Wight both had four hits for UNLV.

 

Fresno State 17, Hawaii 9

In Fresno, Calif., FSU used an eight-run fourth to erase a 6-5 deficit and defeat Hawaii in the opener of their WAC series. Dusty Robinson, who homered in the first, had a two-run single to cap the eight-run rally for the Bulldogs (7-10, 23-25). Robinson finished with four hits, four runs and five RBI. Brennan Gowens had two hits and three RBI for FSU. Vinnie Catricala had two hits and two RBI for the Rainbows (9-11, 27-21).
