Appalachian State named CBI Team of the Week

 

Appalachian State, picked to finish fifth in the Southern Conference by the head coaches, took two of three at eighth-ranked LSU of the SEC over the weekend. The Mountaineers have been named the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Team of the Week.

 

Appalachian State dropped a 4-0 decision on Friday before blanking the Tigers 1-0 on Saturday. The Mountaineers dominated on Sunday with an 11-1 count. It was the program’s first three-game series win over an opponent from a BCS conference. The only other series win was a two-game sweep of Connecticut in 1985. The Tigers had not been held to five or less runs in a home series since scoring three in three contests against Ole Miss in 1982.

 

Regional Teams of the Week

 

Northeast: Rhode Island went 3-0 in the Cougar Invitational in South Carolina, The Rams defeated host College of Charleston 9-5 on Friday, doubled Xavier 8-4 on Saturday and blanked Connecticut 2-0 on Sunday.

 

Southeast: Maryland earns the nod for the second straight week after going 3-0 in the Keith LeClair Classic in Greenville, N.C. After getting rained out on Friday, the Terrapins topped Western Carolina 3-0 and Purdue 11-1 on Saturday. Maryland edged host East Carolina 2-1 on Sunday.

 

Central: Rice put together a 5-0 week to raise its record to 8-0. The Owls took a pair of mid-week games from New Mexico State, 7-5 on Tuesday and 12-4 on Wednesday. Rice swept a three-game series from Dallas Baptist, a super regional participant in 2011. The Owls won 6-5 on Friday, 2-0 on Saturday and 7-3 on Sunday.

 

West: Stanford went 4-0 and dominated another nationally-ranked opponent in a home weekend series. The Cardinal won 9-7 in 11 innings on Tuesday at Pacific. Stanford took three from ninth-ranked Texas, winning 7-2 on Friday, 6-2 on Saturday and 15-1 on Sunday.

 

Honorable Mention

 

Oregon won at Belmont before sweeping a three-game series at nationally-ranked Vanderbilt.

Cal State Fullerton took two of three at home from nationally-ranked TCU.

Stony Brook started its season by going 4-0 in the Colonel Round Robin, with two wins over host Nicholls and two over Alabama State.

Bucknell won three of four at CAA-favorite James Madison, outscoring the Dukes 43-18 over the final three games. JMU swept a four-game set a year ago by a combined 91-36.

Gonzaga stayed undefeated by going 4-0 at the YMBL Cardinal Classic, posting two wins over Illinois and two over host Lamar.

UCLA won at Cal State Northridge on Tuesday before taking two of three from Baylor.

Villanova headed south and swept a three-game series at Norfolk State.

Cal Poly rebounded from a Tuesday loss to Santa Clara to sweep four at Loyola Marymount.

San Diego went 4-0 with two wins over Pacific and victories over Kansas State and nationally-ranked Oregon State.

San Francisco bounced back from a loss to Nevada on Tuesday to sweep a three-game set from Missouri, giving up two runs in the series.
