Xavier Scruggs (Poway, Calif.)

UNLV junior infielder

 

Scruggs slugged five home runs in five games with 14 runs and 12 RBI. He batted .471 (8 for 17) as the Rebels went 4-1 for the week. Scruggs homered twice and scored five in a win over Texas Tech. In a Mountain West series against San Diego State, Scruggs hit three homers in Saturday’s 19-18 win, including a two-run shot in the ninth that forced extra innings. In Sunday’s 20-16 victory, he walked four times and scored five.

 

Regional Players of the Week

 

Northeast

Daniel Hargrave (Hurdle Mills, N.C.)

UNC Wilmington senior infielder

 

Hargrave batted .545 in four games with five homers, three doubles, 11 runs and 12 RBI as the Seahawks posted a 3-1 mark. In a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Delaware, Hargrave smacked four homers and knocked in nine to help the Seahawks take two of three from the Blue Hens.

 

 

Southeast

Dexter Fontenot (Gonzales, La.)

Louisiana-Monroe senior outfielder

 

Fontenot went 13 for 20 (.650) with two doubles, four home runs, 15 RBI and nine runs last week to help lead the Warhawks to a 5-0 record. Fontenot had a big weekend against Sun Belt-foe Middle Tennessee. In the three-game series, he went 8 for 12 with three home runs and 11 RBI. Fontenot raised his batting average to .402 with 10 home runs and 48 RBI.

 

Central

Drew Lee (Mt. Sterling, Ky.)

Morehead State sophomore shortstop

 

Lee had a career week, going 14 for 23 (.609) in five games with three home runs, 16 RBI and seven runs. The sophomore also had a 1.043 slugging percentage and .625 on-base percentage for the week. Lee’s best game came in the finale of a OVC weekend series against Tennessee-Martin. He had three hits, two home runs and seven RBI.

 

West

Scott Gorgen (Concord, Calif.)

UC Irvine junior pitcher

 

Gorgen dominated Big West-rival UC Riverside last Friday night as the Anteaters posted a 7-2 victory. Gorgen fanned a career-high 14 in seven innings in recording his seventh win. The right-hander walked two and surrendered just three hits, as he punched out nine batters in the first four innings, highlighted by a stretch of four consecutive strikeouts.
