Stephen Strasburg (San Diego, Calif.)

San Diego State sophomore pitcher

 

Strasburg threw a one-hit complete shutout in a 1-0 win over Utah last Friday in the opener of their Mountain West Conference series. Strasburg set a school and conference record with 23 strikeouts. The right-hander struck out the side in the first inning, as well as the fifth through eighth. Of the final 17 outs, 16 were strikeouts. Strasburg did not allow a hit until gave up a single in the sixth. Of the four batters to reach base, none advanced past second base.

 

 

Regional Players of the Week

 

Northeast

Josh Vittek (Eldersburg, Md.)
Mount St. Mary's senior catcher and outfielder

 
Vittek slugged his way to a school record by going yard four times last week. The slugger now stands No. 1 on The Mount's all-time homer list with 31 jacks. Vittek broke the record by hitting his 28th home run with a three-run shot during a mid-week contest against Maryland. On the week, Vittek hit .455 with six extra-base hits, 14 RBI, scored five times and walked once.

Southeast

Joey Rodgers (Cincinnati, Ohio)

Furman senior outfielder

 

Rodgers went 8 for 16 (.500) with three home runs and 15 RBI to lead the Furman offense last week. On Friday, Rodgers had seven RBI, including two three-run homers, against College of Charleston. For the week, the senior had multiple RBI in four of five games. He also stole three bases and scored seven runs.

 

 

Central

Jacob Priday (Sikeston, Mo.)

Missouri senior outfielder

 

Priday went 8 for 15 with five homers and 14 RBI. On Friday vs. Texas, Priday set a Big 12 single-game record by hitting four home runs. Priday went 5 for 5 with nine RBI and six runs in the 31-12 Tiger victory. Priday had 11 RBI against Texas in three games and had a 1.667 slugging percentage. Earlier in the week, Priday went 1 for 3 with a three-run homer against in-state rival Missouri State.

 

West

Kevin Atkinson (Surry, British Columbia)

New Mexico junior first baseman

 

Atkinson batted .550 (11-20) in five games for the Lobos with two doubles, four home runs, 10 runs and 11 RBI. In the opener of the MWC series with Air Force, he hit a two-run homer. In the second game, Atkinson went 4-5 with two homers, a triple, four runs and four RBI. He had four more hits in the series finale with one homer and five RBI.
