Thomas DiBenedetto has been named a volunteer assistant at Georgetown. DiBenedetto played at Trinity (Conn.) College and graduated in 2008 with a degree in economics. He helped the 2008 squad go 45-1 and capture the NCAA Division III national championship. He played two seasons in the Boston Red Sox organization, one year in Italy and this past season in the Baltimore Orioles system. DiBenedetto also coached the Illinois Indians, a youth travel team.

 

Three-time Oklahoma All-American Javier Flores was recognized at the Sooners’ 10th annual Diamond Dinner. Flores played at OU from 1994-97. The catcher batted .344 during his career with 20 home runs and 154 RBI.

 

Texas Tech edged its alumni 5-4 on Jan. 26. Bryant Burleson went 3 for 4 with one RBI. Dominic Moreno tossed a pair of hitless innings with two strikeouts.

 

Rain forced cancellation of alumni games at Long Beach State and UC Irvine on Jan. 26.

 

Florida State sophomore right-hander Mike Compton (right) is out indefinitely after suffering a right elbow sprain. He will be reevaluated in two weeks.

 

Corey Haines has been named volunteer assistant coach at Maryland. He will work with the infielders, direct all baseball camps and assist with on-campus recruiting. Haines was a volunteer assistant a season ago at Shippensburg after working for three seasons as a volunteer and student assistant at Maryland from 2009-11.

 

Old Dominion will have 20 games broadcast on Star 1310 (WGH) AM. Ted Alexander will handle play-by-play, assisted by Doug Ripley. The radio broadcasts will begin on March 8 at 6 p.m. against Northeastern.

 

The 2 Seam Dream Foundation will hold its first Cancer Awareness Day on Jan. 26 at LSU’s Alex Box Stadium. The foundation was started by former Tiger pitcher Rick Greene to raise funds for cancer research. The event includes a 4K walk and 5K run, food and drinks, auctions and raffles, a home run derby and a softball game featuring current and former Major League Baseball players.

 

George Washington will hold the official Grand Opening of Barcroft Park on March 2. A reception will be held at 11 a.m. with ribbon cutting at noon. The Colonials will face Quinnipiac at 1 p.m.

 

Stanford will hold its Cardinal & White scrimmage on Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. at Sunken Diamond. Admission is free.

 

For the start of practice, Arkansas will have two scrimmages this weekend: Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Baum Stadium. All practices and scrimmages are free and open to the public.

 

Arkansas will hold its annual Meet the Razorbacks Day on Feb. 9 from 4-6 p.m. at the Northwest Arkansas Mall. Fans will have the opportunity for autographs and pictures.

 

Mississippi State will have three scrimmages this weekend at Dudy Noble Field: Friday at 4 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. All are free and open to the public.

 

Georgia Southern will have two scrimmages this weekend at J.I Clements Stadium: Friday at 4:15 p.m. and Sunday at 2:30 p.m.

 

Nicholls will have two scrimmages this weekend at Ray E. Didier Field: Friday at 3 p.m. and Saturday at noon. All scrimmages and practices are free and open to the public.

 

South Alabama will have an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.

 

William and Mary has season tickets on sale for its 30-game home schedule at Plumeri Park. Season tickets start at $40. Single game tickets are now available as well.

 

Ryan Wood (left) will be a student assistant coach at East Carolina, assisting with infielders, pitchers and hitters. Wood spent the past three years playing in the Kansas City Royals organization. Wood helped the Pirates reach three NCAA Regionals (2007-09) and one Super Regional (2009). Wood was an All-American in 2009, batting .379 with 87 runs and on-base percentage of .486. He plans to graduate in December of 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in communications (media studies).

 

Former Blue Devils Bob Brower and Mike Trombley will be the guest speakers at Duke’s inaugural First Pitch Hot Stove Classic on Jan. 26 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Fuqua School of Business’ Kirby Reading Room on campus. Brower played at Duke from 1979-82 and played four seasons in the Major Leagues with the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. Trombley pitched for the Blue Devils from 1987-89 and was in the Major Leagues from 1992-2002 with the Minnesota Twins, Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles.

 

Auburn newcomer Terrance Dedrick (right) was named the 2012 Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Junior College Player of the Year. The right-hander and outfielder batted .366 with 32 RBI for Shelton State Community College in 2012 and went 6-0 with six saves and a 2.80 ERA on the mound.

 

UCF will have its annual Fan Fest on Jan. 26 inside The Venue following the men’s basketball game. The event is expected to begin at 6 p.m.

 

Iowa will hold its fourth annual Steak Fry on Feb. 12 at the Bella Sala Event Center in Tiffin. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. with dinner, silent auction, photos and autographs. The program will begin at 6:45 p.m. and will include a live auction.

 

South Carolina will hold three scrimmages this weekend at Carolina Stadium that are free and open to the public: Friday at 3:30 p.m., Saturday and Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

 

Texas Tech has announced its TV schedule, with seven home appearances on Fox Sports. The games will be broadcast on Fox College Sports, Fox Sports Southwest or Fox Sports Southwest Plus. Times listed are Central.
