Former Ohio All-American Mike Schmidt will be
inducted into the Mid-American Conference Hall of Fame on May
17. A member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, Schmidt earned four
letters with the Bobcats from 1967-71. He earned All-America
honors as a junior and senior, leading OU to the College World
Series in 1970. Schmidt was taken by the Philadelphia Phillies
in the second round of the 1971 draft and played with the
Phillies from 1972-89. He was a 12-time All-Star, 10-time Gold
Glove Award winner, three-time NL MVP and a member of the 1980
World Series champions.
Southern
Miss will hold its inaugural “Pack the Pete in Pink” on May 12
against East Carolina at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
Wearing pink will show support for the Pink Ribbon Fund and
Breast Cancer Awareness in the Pine Belt. Sales of pink T-shirts
will go to the Pink Ribbon Fund. The Golden Eagles will wear
pink wristbands for the game.
Mississippi State head coach John Cohen was
suspended for one game by the SEC for violation of its
sportsmanship rules. Cohen received a post-game ejection at
Alabama on May 6 and, per NCAA rules, missed MSU’s game with
Mississippi Valley State on May 8. The SEC suspension will come
in the series opener at Florida on May 11.
Louisville’s
Jim Patterson Stadium will be expanded with the addition of
1,500 chair-back seats to increase seating to more than 4,000.
The $4 million plan, with a leadership gift by Mr. and Mrs. Jim
Patterson, will begin on June 15. There will also be an expanded
press box and a visiting team locker room.
Portland is asking fans to bring old gloves, bats
and baseballs to Joe Etzel Field for free admission with the
donated equipment during this weekend’s WCC series with Saint
Mary’s. The items will be sent to Pitch In For Baseball, a
volunteer-driven group that distributes the items to children
around the world.
