Search for Melendez's Replacement Continues at B-CU

Bethune-Cookman University is still looking for a replacement for Mervyl Melendez, who left for Alabama State on June 16.

But the Wildcats appear to be getting closer, bringing in several candidates including two with pitching backgrounds: former B-CU assistant Joel Sanchez and former major leaguer and Tennessee assistant Jason Beverlin.

Sanchez assisted Melendez from 2000-08 before taking a pitching coach position in the Washington Nationals organization. He joined Tim Touma's staff at Daytona State for the 2011 season.

Beverlin, who starred on the mound at Western Carolina and reached the major leagues in 2002 with Cleveland and Detroit, most recently spent two seasons as pitching coach at Tennessee under Todd Raleigh.

The Big East announced that its championship will be held at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla., for 2012 and 2013. Bright House Field has been the tournament site for five of the past six years. It is also one of the venues for the Big East-Big Ten Challenge each February. Bright House Field is the spring training site for the Philadelphia Phillies and the home of the Clearwater Threshers, the Florida State League affiliate of the Phillies.

Northwestern will host Block Cinema’s seventh annual showing of “Rare Films from the Baseball Hall of Fame” on Friday, Aug. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pick-Laudati Auditorium of the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art. Highlights of the 1935 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers will be shown, as well as footage of Willie Mays, Ty Cobb, Jackie Robinson, Bob Feller, Satchel Paige, Walter Johnson and Nellie Fox. There will also be a selection of classic Gillette TV commercials featuring standout players.

A native of St. George, Utah, Reber is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
