The Cape Cod League All-Stars were announced on
Friday, July 22. Stony Brook leads the way with three players.
Catcher Patrick Cantwell and outfielder Travis Jankowsky both
play for Bourne and will represent the West, while pitcher Tyler
Johnson of Orleans will play for the East. The game will be
played on Friday, July 29, at 7 p.m. at Fenway Park in Boston.
The game will be televised on Comcast SportsNet New England, as
well as Comcast SportsNet Chicago, Comcast SportsNet California,
Comcast SportsNet MidAtlantic, The Mtn and CSS.

State will install the AstroTurf GameDay Grass 3D60 infill
system on Frank Myers Field at Tointon Family Stadium. The
infield, outfield, warning tracks, bullpens and home plate areas
will all be covered. The pitcher’s mound will be the only
Eddie Cornejo has been hired as an assistant
coach at UC Santa Barbara. He will work with the infielders.
Cornejo was an assistant at UC Riverside this past year after
serving as associate head coach and interim head coach at
Riverside City College. Cornejo played at Riverside City College
and at Oklahoma before a six-season minor league career.
Daniel Aldrich, an outfielder from College of
Charleston, won the Coastal Plain League All-Star Home Run Derby
by tying the event record of 18 dingers. He matched the 2004
total of Dusty Benko. With his father, Charles, pitching to him,
Aldrich also won the TD Ameritrade Home Run Derby in Omaha
earlier this month.
Search for Melendez's Replacement Continues at
Bethune-Cookman University is still looking for a replacement
for Mervyl Melendez, who left for Alabama State on June 16.
But the Wildcats appear to be getting closer, bringing in
several candidates including two with pitching backgrounds:
former B-CU assistant Joel Sanchez and former major leaguer and
Tennessee assistant Jason Beverlin.
Sanchez assisted Melendez from 2000-08 before taking a pitching
coach position in the Washington Nationals organization. He
joined Tim Touma's staff at Daytona State for the 2011 season.
Beverlin, who starred on the mound at Western Carolina and
reached the major leagues in 2002 with Cleveland and Detroit,
most recently spent two seasons as pitching coach at Tennessee
under Todd Raleigh.
The Big East announced that its championship will
be held at Bright House Field in Clearwater, Fla., for 2012 and
2013. Bright House Field has been the tournament site for five
of the past six years. It is also one of the venues for the Big
East-Big Ten Challenge each February. Bright House Field is the
spring training site for the Philadelphia Phillies and the home
of the Clearwater Threshers, the Florida State League affiliate
of the Phillies.
Northwestern will host Block Cinema’s seventh
annual showing of “Rare Films from the Baseball Hall of Fame” on
Friday, Aug. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pick-Laudati Auditorium of
the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art. Highlights of the 1935
World Series between the Chicago Cubs and the Detroit Tigers
will be shown, as well as footage of Willie Mays, Ty Cobb,
Jackie Robinson, Bob Feller, Satchel Paige, Walter Johnson and
Nellie Fox. There will also be a selection of classic Gillette
TV commercials featuring standout players.
After just completing his freshman season at
Kentucky, Dallen Reber will miss the next two campaigns as he
goes on a two-year church mission to Santiago, Chile. A native
of St. George, Utah, Reber is a member of the Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints. Reber fought through injuries in
his first year in Lexington, going 9 for 29 (.310) in 15 games
with two home runs and four RBI.

Southern Illinois baseball will hold a Wrigley
Field Rooftop Fundraiser on Sunday, Sept. 4, as the Chicago Cubs
host the Pittsburgh Pirates at 1:20 p.m. The cost of $125
includes admittance to the rooftop, food and beverages. Door
prizes will be awarded and each donor receives a t-shirt.
