The Colonial Athletic Association has increased
its tournament field from four to six, beginning with the 2012
championship. The double-elimination event will be held over
four days. The site for the 2012 tournament has yet to be
determined.
Junior Tyler Sibley of Texas State was named a
Southland Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Sibley is an
accounting major with a 3.91 GPA. He was second team CoSIDA
Academic All-America and was selected as the 2011 Texas State
Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. Sibley sent a school record
with a 30-game hit streak this season. The second baseman batted
.340 with 12 doubles, six homers, 37 RBI, 62 runs and 20 steals.
Sibley was picked in the 50th round of the MLB Draft by the St.
Louis Cardinals.
Stanford right-hander Mark Appel is a member of
Team USA and Cardinal first baseman Brian Ragira is an
alternate. Appel was 6-7 with a 3.02 ERA in 17 starts. Ragira,
the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year, batted .329 and led the team
with 46 RBI.
Oregon State left-hander Matt Boyd has been named
an alternate for Team USA. He posted an ERA of 1.57 in 30 games
with four saves. Boyd fanned 35 in 46 innings.
South
Carolina associate head coach Chad Holbrook (right) has taken
his name out of consideration for head coach at Tennessee.
Holbrook is in his third season with the Gamecocks, serving as
hitting instructor and recruiting coordinator. He came to
Columbia after 15 seasons at North Carolina. USC is making its
second consecutive trip to the College World Series, having won
the national championship a season ago.
