Former Texas A&M All-American hurler Barret Loux
has signed a professional contract with the Texas Rangers. He
was the sixth overall pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks this past
June. After a change in team management, he was not signed and
was declared a free agent on Sept. 1. Loux was 11-2 in 2010 for
the Aggies with an ERA of 2.53 and 136 strikeouts in 105
innings.
North Carolina sophomore outfielder Brian Goodwin
has been suspended for the spring semester for violation of
University policy. Goodwin plans to return to UNC for the
2011-12 academic year. A Freshman All-American, Goodwin started
all 60 games for the Tar Heels in 2010 with a batting average of
.291.
Due to expected inclement weather, the scrimmage
between Cal State Fullerton and Concordia, originally scheduled
for Saturday, will be played on Friday, Nov. 19, at 5 p.m. at
Goodwin Field.
Houston assistant coach Jack Cressend will be
inducted into the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame on
Saturday, Nov. 20, in Chatham, Mass. He was a two-time All-Star
for the Cotuit Kettleers in 1995 and 1996. Cressend led the
league in victories in each season, going 7-1 with a 2.44 ERA in
1995 and 7-0 with a 1.89 ERA in 1996. The Tulane product signed
with the Boston Red Sox as an undrafted free agent and was a
member of the 2002 AL Central Division champion Minnesota Twins.
The members of the FIU baseball team will receive
their 2010 Sun Belt Championship rings on Thursday, Feb. 18, at
halftime of the men’s basketball game against Florida State.
Former Buffalo outfielder Eric Flynn has signed a
professional contract with the Beenleigh Hawks of the Greater
Brisbane Baseball League in Australia. He played for the Bulls
from 2006-09.
Coastal Carolina will face the Texas Rangers in
an exhibition game on Tuesday, March 29, at 6:35 p.m. at BB&T
Coastal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Myrtle Beach Pelicans
are the new Class A-Advanced affiliate of the American League
Champion Rangers. Tickets are now on sale through the Pelicans
ticket office.
A “Celebration of Cal’s Life” will be held at
Southern Illinois’ Abe Martin Field on Monday, Nov. 22, from 4-5
p.m. to honor the life of head coach Dan Callahan. A reception
hosted by the Callahan Family and Saluki Athletics will be in
the Stadium Club at Saluki Stadium from 5-8 p.m. Callahan died
on Monday from a rare form of skin cancer.
The Hot Stove Banquet in Charleston, S.C.,
featuring former Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox, has been
moved to McAlister Field House to accommodate the large crowd.
The event, hosted by The Citadel and the Charleston RiverDogs,
will be held on Jan. 28.
