Texas fell behind 5-0 after four innings before
rallying for a 7-5 exhibition win over Vanderbilt in 12 innings
Sunday afternoon at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. Kevin Lusson (1 2B, 1
R, 2 RBI) and Alex Silver (1 2B, 1 R, 1 RBI) both went 2 for 4
for the Longhorns. The Commodores scored four runs against
Taylor Jungmann in the first four innings on their way to a 7-2
win in 12 innings on Friday evening.
Carter Sackett had two home runs as Georgia State
topped the Ontario Blue Jays 12-2 Saturday evening at The Field
at Panthersville. Brett Maxwell added three hits for the
Panthers.
Trevor Gretzky, the son of Wayne Gretzky, has
committed to play baseball at San Diego State, according to
fanhouse.com. A first baseman at Westlake Village Oaks Christian
High, Gretzky batted .341 a season ago with two homers and 33
RBI.
Ray
Tanner (right) has received a five-year contract extension at
South Carolina through the 2015 season, worth $510,000 annually.
Tanner has been head coach of the Gamecocks for 14 seasons
(634-282, .692), winning the national championship in 2010. He
has been a head coach for 23 years, posting a record of
1,029-455-3 (.693).
Louisville will hold its fifth annual Pizza Bowl
Series at Jim Patterson Stadium beginning on Thursday, Oct. 14,
at 5 p.m. Subsequent games will be Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at
5 p.m., Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Wednesday at 2 p.m. Games are open
to the public and admission is free.
Oklahoma State will begin its best-of-five world
series on Sunday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds
Stadium. The series will continue daily through Thursday with
each beginning at 3 p.m. Games are open to the public at no
charge.
The Cardinal-White series for Arkansas will start
on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 11:05 a.m. at Baum Stadium.
Coastal Carolina will hold its annual Pro Day on
Friday, Oct. 15, at 1 p.m. at Watson Stadium/Vrooman Field,
followed by the first game of the Chanticleer World Series. Game
2 of the three-game set is Saturday at 10:30 a.m., with Game 3
on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. All events are free and open to the
public.
Texas Tech will hold a scrimmage on Friday, Oct.
15, at 5 p.m. at Dan Law Field. The scrimmage is open to the
public and admission is free.
Kansas State will hold its Fall World Series next
week: Oct. 19, Oct. 21 and Oct. 22, all starting at 6 p.m. at
Tointon Family Stadium. All games are open to the public.
Cal State Fullerton will have four fall home
scrimmages at Goodwin Field: Oct. 29 vs. Cal Baptist at 2 p.m.,
Nov. 6 vs. San Diego at noon, Nov. 13 vs. Cal State Dominguez
Hills at noon, and Nov. 20 vs. Concordia at noon. All are open
to the public and free.
LSU is No. 29 in the sportsfangraph.com rankings
of baseball social media followers, ahead of three Major League
teams, each minor league team and all other college baseball
programs. The Tigers have 108,875 followers, more than the
Pittsburgh Pirates at 104, 804, Arizona Diamondbacks at 83,592
and Washington Nationals at 55,873.
Pete Jenkins has been named volunteer assistant
at Elon. A former catcher who played in the Milwaukee Brewers
organization, Jenkins will work with the Phoenix catchers. He
was the volunteer assistant for the past three years at Ohio
State after spending two seasons on the staff at Florida State.
Jenkins played one season at Nebraska after two years at
Riverside CC.
Steve Smith, a coach with the Cleveland Indians,
will be inducted into the Pepperdine Hall of Fame. Smith played
second base for the Waves in 1975 and 1976, as Pepperdine posted
a record of 66-32-1. Smith was selected by San Diego in the 24th
round of the 1976 draft and played in the Padres’ system through
1982, rising as high as AAA. He managed for 12 seasons in the
minors before coaching in the major leagues with Seattle, Texas,
Philadelphia and Cleveland.

this week at Doug Kingsmore Stadium with free admission:

Sunday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m.
Matt Plante has been hired as an assistant coach
at Oakland. He will be recruiting coordinator and will coach the
infielders and catchers while assisting with the hitters. Plante
was a volunteer assistant and graduate manager this past year at
Kansas State. He was also an assistant coach and PEAC skill
instructor at Springfield (Mass.) College.
California will hold its 2010 Alumni Weekend on
Oct. 23-25. The Golden Bears will host Arizona State in football
on Saturday, Oct. 23. The Alumni Game will be on Sunday, Oct.
24, at 1 p.m. at Evans Diamond. The Bullpen Club Golf Classic
will be on Monday, Oct. 25, at 10 a.m. at the Contra Costa
Country Club in Pleasant Hill, Calif., followed by dinner and a
silent and live auction.
Auburn will hold its annual Celebrity Home Run
Derby on Friday, Oct. 22, at 6 p.m. at Plainsman Park to benefit
the Boys and Girls Club of Lee County. Fans will watch former
players Mark Bellhorn, Todd Faulkner, Gabe Gross, Bobby
Huddleston and Mailon Kent against Brian Fletcher, Ryan Jenkins,
Hunter Morris and Trent Mummey, members of the 2010 squad with
set a school record of 131 home runs. The quartet just completed
its first summer in professional baseball.
Nicholls State will hold its annual fall alumni
gathering on Saturday, Oct. 23. An intrasquad scrimmage will be
followed by the football game against Central Arkansas at 4 p.m.
at John L. Guidry Stadium. Its 2010 Coaches Committee Golf
Tournament will be held on Saturday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 a.m. at
Bayou Country Club in Thibodaux.
Dates for Ohio State’s Scarlet & Gray World
Series have been set: Game 1 on Oct. 13 at 6 p.m., Game 2 on
Oct. 15 at 3:30 p.m., Game 3 on Oct. 16 at 3 p.m., Game 4 on
Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. (if necessary) and Game 5 on Oct. 21 at 3:30
p.m. (if necessary). The public is invited to the games at Bill
Davis Stadium and admission is free.
