Wheeler is new head coach at Temple

Ryan Wheeler has been named head coach at Temple University.

Wheeler has been an assistant coach for the past five seasons at the University of Richmond, coordinating recruiting while working with hitters and infielders. The Spiders were 29-27-2 this past season, including 13-11 in the Atlantic 10. UR reached the championship game of the Atlantic 10 Tournament, falling to Charlotte.

Prior to his arrival at Richmond, Wheeler spent one year as an assistant at Penn and nine seasons as an assistant at William and Mary.

A graduate of Penn State, Wheeler was taken by the California Angels in the 31st round of the 1994 MLB Draft.

Wheeler replaces Rob Valli, who resigned in June. The Owls were 24-29 in 2011, including 4-20 in the Atlantic 10.
