UCF Names Rooney Head Coach

 

The University of Central Florida has named Terry Rooney, the associate head coach at LSU, its new coach.

Rooney, a 1996 graduate of Radford University, has served as an assistant coach and pitching coach for the past 12 seasons, including stops at George Washington, James Madison, Old Dominion, Stetson, Notre Dame and LSU. He joined Tigers head coach Paul Mainieri in 2003 when Mainieri was head coach at Notre Dame and joined LSU two years ago when Mainieri arrived.

Rooney, 35, has coached 28 pitchers who have been drafted, 10 in the first 10 rounds, including Justin Verlander and Jeff Samardzjia.

Rooney is a native of Fairfax, Va., and married to Shaun.
