Owens Leaves Le Moyne for
Bryant
Former
Le Moyne skipper Steve Owens (left) has been named head coach at
Bryant.
Owens, 44, had a record of 342-217 (.611) in 11
winning seasons with the Dolphins. He took Le Moyne to three
NCAA Tournaments and was MAAC Coach of the Year in 2004 and
2006. At the start of the 2010 season, Owens had the
13th-highest winning percentage in the country among active
Division I coaches. Owens had 14 Dolphins drafted and 22 sign
professional contracts.
Including eight years at Cortland State, Owens
owns an overall record of 587-299-1 (.672) in 19 seasons as a
head coach. He has averaged more that 30 wins per season.
Owens took Cortland to seven NCAA Division III
regional tournaments and four appearances in the College World
Series.
A native of Sauquoit, N.Y., Owens was a four-year
starter in the infield at St. Lawrence with a career batting
average of .349. A 1987 graduate, Owens will be inducted into
the St. Lawrence Athletic Hall of Fame this fall.
Owens was drafted by the Chicago Cubs and spent
two seasons in their system.
Bryant was 34-22 in 2010, its second Division I
season. The Bulldogs won the Northeast Conference regular-season
crown with a 25-7 league record. Bryant will become
NCAA-Tournament eligible in 2013.
Owens replaced Jamie Pinzino, who resigned in
June after being arrested on campus in late May for an
alcohol-related altercation.
