Cooper Promoted to Head Coach at Grambling State

Grambling State assistant coach James Cooper (left) was promoted to head coach by GSU Athletics Director Lin Dawson.

Cooper, 27, earned a Bachelor of Science degree in marketing in 2004 from Grambling and a Master’s degree in sports administrations in 2008 while a graduate assistant with the Tigers.

A native of Cullen, La., Cooper was first team all-SWAC his senior season after being named second team all-conference twice. Cooper spent a short time in the Houston Astros organization before playing one year with the Sussex Skyhawks of the independent Can-Am League.

Cooper replaces Barrett Rey, who resigned to become head coach at Alcorn State. The Tigers were 17-37 this past season and fell in the semifinals of the SWAC Tournament.
