LSU rises to top spot in CBI Composite Poll

Virginia sits in second, Florida State places third, Georgia Tech is fourth

By sitting on top of two of the national polls, the LSU Tigers are No. 1 in the latest CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

The USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll will not have its first regular-season poll until next week, so Kendall Rogers and Rivals.com will pinch-hit this week for them.

The defending national champion, LSU is first in the Collegiate Baseball and NCBWA polls and second in the other two polls. The Tigers swept a three-game home series this past weekend with Centenary.

The ACC filled the next three spots. Virginia is first in two polls and second in the CBI Composite Poll. The Cavaliers won two of three at No. 20 East Carolina.

Florida State comes in at No. 3. The Seminoles are second in one poll, fourth in another and seventh in two. The Seminoles took three from Georgia State in Tallahassee.

Georgia Tech is fourth in the CBI Composite poll. The Yellow Jackets swept its three-game home series with Missouri State.

Former No. 1 Texas dropped two of three at home to New Mexico to fall into a tie for fifth with UC Irvine. The Anteaters won three against Loyola Marymount.

South Carolina enters the poll at No. 14 after its home sweep of Duquesne. Stanford arrives at No. 19 after its three-game sweep of Rice.

The Owls took the biggest fall, dropping from fifth to No. 15.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that four national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Arizona State in No. 2 in one poll, No. 14 in another.
