Texas takes top spot in CBI Composite Preseason Poll

LSU sits second, Virginia places third, Cal State Fullerton is fourth

 

By sitting on top of all four national polls, the Texas Longhorns are No. 1 in the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Preseason Poll.

The national runner-up a season ago, the Longhorns were 50-16-1 in 2009. Texas returns 22 lettermen from a year ago, including five positional starters and 10 pitchers. The Longhorns were second in the country with a 2.95 ERA and return all four starting pitchers, including sophomore Taylor Jungmann (pictured right).

Defending national champion LSU is second in the CBI Composite Poll. The Tigers, 56-17 a season ago, are second in three of the polls and third in the other.

After making its first trip to the College World Series, Virginia checks in at No. 3. The Cavaliers are second in one poll, third in two polls and fourth in the other. Virginia posted a record of 49-15-1 in 2009.

Cal State Fullerton comes in at No. 4. The Titans are third in one poll and fourth in three polls. The Titans were 47-16 a season ago, reaching the College World Series.

Rice rounds out the top five. The Owls were 43-18 a year ago, finishing ninth in the final CBI Composite Poll for 2009.

There are six teams from the ACC in the CBI Composite Poll, and four from the SEC. There are two teams from the Big West, Conference USA and Pac-10. There are single entries from the Big East, Big South, Big 12 and Mountain West.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that four national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Oregon State in No. 10 in one poll, No. 25 in another.
