Arizona State climbs to No. 1 in CBI Composite Poll

UNC rises to second, LSU remains in third, Georgia drops to fourth

After going 4-1 in the past week, Arizona State has climbed into the No. 1 spot in the latest CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

The Sun Devils (23-5) are first in three of the national polls (Baseball America, NCBWA and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls) and second in the Collegiate Baseball poll. ASU split a mid-week pair with then-No. 1 Cal State Fullerton and swept a three-game Pac-10 series with Washington in Seattle.

North Carolina (24-7) defeated Davidson and Old Dominion at home before taking two of three at then-No. 5 Georgia Tech to rise from second to sixth.

LSU (23-8) lost at Tulane prior to winning two of three at then-No. 2 Georgia to maintain third place. The Bulldogs (25-5) defeated Clemson twice before its series loss to LSU to fall to fourth. Rice (21-7) beat Dallas Baptist before sweeping a three-game Conference USA series with Tulane to climb two spots to fifth.

After its two-game split with Arizona State, Cal State Fullerton (20-7) lost two of three to UC Irvine to fall from first to sixth. With a 3-1 week, the Anteaters (19-8) rose from No. 11 to No. 8.

Coastal Carolina (24-7) enjoyed a 5-0 week with two wins over UNC Wilmington and a three-game Big South sweep of Gardner-Webb to jump five spots to No. 19.

Four teams climb back into the poll: No. 20 Oregon State (18-6), No. 22 TCU (19-9), No. 23 San Diego (22-11) and No. 24 San Diego State (22-11).

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that four national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Arkansas is No. 1 in one poll, No. 12 in two other polls.
