Georgia Rises to No. 1 in CBI Composite Poll

Cal State Fullerton is second, Arizona State jumps to third, LSU is fourth

After a surprising week of upsets, Georgia has emerged as the No. 1 team in the latest CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

The Bulldogs (19-2) are first in three of the four national polls (Collegiate Baseball, NCBWA and USA Today/ESPN Coaches polls) and sixth in the Baseball America poll. Georgia went 4-0 this past week, with a win at Georgia State and a three-game SEC sweep of Mississippi State.

Cal State Fullerton (16-3) went 3-0 with a sweep of Summit-favorite Oral Roberts to rise to No. 2. The Titans are first in the Baseball America poll.

Arizona State (17-3) opened Pac-10 play with a three-game sweep of in-state rival Arizona to climb three spots to No. 3. LSU (17-5) went 4-1 with non-conference wins over Northwestern State and McNeese State and a 2-1 SEC series win at South Carolina. Miami (Fla.) (18-4) had mid-week wins over St. Thomas and UMBC and took two of three at previously unbeaten Virginia to jump four spots to No. 5.

North Carolina (17-4) lost an ACC home series to Duke to fall from first to sixth. Texas (14-6) lost at Rice and was swept in a Big 12 series at Kansas to drop from second to tenth.

Arkansas (16-4) went 4-1, splitting a pair with Nebraska and sweeping a three-game SEC set at Auburn to rise from No. 20 to No. 13. The Razorbacks remain undefeated in conference play at 6-0.

Ohio State (13-2) makes its first appearance at No. 23 and East Carolina (16-4) returns to the poll at No. 24.

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that four national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Virginia is No. 8 in one poll, No. 24 in another.
