North Carolina claims top spot in CBI Composite Poll

LSU sits in second, Texas A&M is third, Texas takes fourth

By sitting on top of two of the four national polls, North Carolina is No. 1 in the latest CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll.

The USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll will not have its first regular-season poll until next week, so Kendall Rogers and Rivals.com will pinch-hit this week for them.

The Tar Heels (3-0) swept a three-game home series this past weekend with VMI and are No. 1 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) poll and the Rivals.com poll.

LSU tied UNC in total points, but is second since the Heels are on top of two polls. The Tigers (3-0) are first in the Collegiate Baseball poll and second in the other three polls. LSU swept a three-game home set with Villanova this past weekend.

Texas A&M (4-0) is first in the Baseball America poll and third in the CBI Composite Poll. The Aggies took four from Wright State to start the season.

Texas (4-0) climbed two spots to No. 4 after winning four from Illinois-Chicago. Georgia (3-0) won three against Youngstown State to remain fifth.

After dropping two of three at Cal Poly, Rice (1-2) fell from third to seventh. Ole Miss went 1-2 at the Coca-Cola Classic in Mobile, Ala., and dropped 10 spots to No. 20.

UC Irvine (3-1) won three of four at Hawaii and jumped from No. 16 to No. 8. Florida (3-0) swept a three-game set from Louisville to improve 11 spots to No. 14.

About the CollegeBaseballInsider.com Composite Poll

BA-Baseball America poll; CB-Collegiate Baseball poll; NCBWA-National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll; R-Rivals.com poll; U/E-USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll; Composite-Sum of rankings; Last rank-Last week's composite ranking

Why a composite poll? CBI felt that four national polls was enough. Plus, each week you find discrepancies that make it tough to gauge where a team really is. This week's example: Miami (Fla.) in No. 10 in one poll, unranked in another.
