Sborz tosses one-hit shutout as Virginia blanks Ga. Tech

Houston rallies past UC, Radford tops Longwood, The Citadel beats ETSU

Josh Sborz tossed a one-hit shutout as Virginia sent Georgia Tech home to extend its win streak to six. Sborz (3-2) walked two and fanned eight in seven innings. He retired the first 18 hitters before surrendering a leadoff double in the seventh by pinch-hitter Ryan Peurifoy of the Yellow Jackets (32-23). Daniel Pinero (2 for 2, 3 R, 4 RBI) and Pavin Smith (2 for 4, 2 RBI) both homered for the Cavaliers (34-19). Adam Haseley went 2 for 3 with a walk and four runs for UVa.

 

Skye Bolt drove in a pair of runs as North Carolina eliminated Virginia Tech. Alex Raburn had three hits and a run for the Tar Heels (33-22). Zac Gallen (4-3, 6.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 7 K) earned the win, while Trevor Kelley (2.1 IP, 2 H, UE, 5 K) recorded his fourth save. Saige Jenco went 3 for 5 with a double, one run and one RBI for the Hokies (27-27).

 

American (Bright House Field, Clearwater, Fla.)

Ashford Fulmer had a two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 4-3 deficit as Houston rallied past Cincinnati. Kyle Survance (3 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Corey Julks (1 for 3, 2 RBI) both homered for the Cougars (40-17). Aaron Fletcher (2-0, 2 IP, H, UE, BB, 4 K) earned the victory, while Seth Romero (3 IP, BB, 6 K) recorded his seventh save. Kyle Mottice went deep for the Bearcats (15-40).

 

Luke Maglich went 3 for 4 with a homer and four RBI as USF knocked off Memphis. He had a three-run homer in the bottom of the second to snap a 2-2 tie. Kevin Merrell had three hits and three runs for the Bulls (33-22-1). Darien Tubbs had two hits and two RBI for the Tigers (35-20).

In Boiling Springs, N.C., Patrick Marshall hit a long homer to right in the bottom of the seventh to break a 3-3 tie as Radford slipped past Longwood. The Highlanders (40-14) built a 3-0 lead, only to see the Lancers (21-33) rally with two runs in the sixth and tie it on Alex Lewis’ homer in the seventh. Marshall went 3 for 3 with two RBI, and Brad Keen added a sac fly in the eighth inning for Radford. Daniel Bridgeman (5-2) worked two innings for the win, and Ryan Meisinger earned his 14th save.

 

Andre Scrubb tossed his first collegiate complete game and struck out 10 as High Point knocked off Liberty. Brady Williamson went 4 for 5 with a homer and two runs, and Josh Greene went 3 for 4 with a homer, three runs and two RBI for the Panthers (28-24). Sammy Taormina went 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBI for the Flames (33-22).

 

Shane Sawczak allowed one hit over seven innings, and G.K. Young went 3 for 4 with a double, homer, two runs and career-best five RBI as Coastal Carolina coasted past Charleston Southern. Michael Paez added two hits and three runs, which was more than enough for Sawczak (4-4), a freshman who is 3-1 with a 1.50 ERA over his past five games. The Chants improved to 36-18, while the Bucs fell to 23-29.

 

Tyler Asbill went 2 for 4 with three RBI, and Anthony Paulsen had a two-run double as part of a four-run seventh inning as Winthrop rallied to beat Campbell. The Eagles (39-17) have won 14 straight games against Big South foes as Sam Kmiec (6-4) allowed five runs in seven innings. Cedric Mullins went 3 for 4 with three doubles and an RBI for the Camels (31-24).

 

Southern (Riley Park, Charleston, S.C.)

#8 The Citadel 8, #9 ETSU 2 (ETSU eliminated)

James Reeves allowed seven hits and two runs (one earned) in seven innings as The Citadel eliminated ETSU in the SoCon tourney opener. Reeves (8-3) walked one and struck out eight. Steven Hansen had a two-run double and scored in the fourth as the Bulldogs (26-28) took the lead for good. Stephen Windham (2 for 4) had a two-run single to highlight a five-run seventh for The Citadel. Zach Thompson went 2 for 4 with a run for the Bucs (21-35).
