Cruz pitches Texas Southern to SWAC championship

Lehigh takes Patriot crown, Cal tops USC, UCLA wins at least share of title

 

SWAC Tournament (New Orleans, La.)

Championship Game: W1 Texas Southern 10, W2 Southern 0

Frank Cruz IV tossed a four-hit shutout as Texas Southern blanked Southern to claim the SWAC crown. Cruz (6-3) walked one and fanned four in the nine-inning complete game. The Tigers (31-17) scored four in the fourth and five in the sixth to take control. Zach Howell (3 for 4, 3 R) had a three-run double to highlight the four-run fourth. Jose DeLa Torre went 1 for 4 with a double for the Jaguars (20-23).

 

Patriot League Tournament (Annapolis, Md.)

Championship Game: #2 Lehigh 4, #1 Navy 3 (10)

Mike Garzillo had a leadoff double in the top of the 10th and scored on a two-out base hit by Connor Faust as Lehigh captured the third and deciding game of the championship series at Navy to claim its second Patriot League title and first since 2006. Justin Pacchioli and James Bleming both had two hits and a run for the Mountain Hawks (25-27). Nick Macaione (2-5) pitched all 10 innings for Lehigh with five hits, three runs (two earned), one walk and four strikeouts. Adrian Chinnery had a two-run double in the fourth for the Midshipmen (37-20).

 

California 7, No. 16 USC 5

In Berkeley, Calif., Chris Paul went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBI as California evened its Pac-12 series with USC. Preston Grand Pre also drove in two for the Golden Bears (16-10, 32-17). Alex Schick (3-1, 0.2 IP, 2 H, K) picked up the win, while Dylan Nelson (2 IP, 2 BB) recorded his eighth save. Blake Lacey knocked in a pair for the Trojans (16-10, 35-17).

 

No. 3 UCLA 5, Arizona 3

In Los Angeles, Brett Stephens and Chris Keck had two-run singles in a four-run fifth as UCLA erased a 2-0 deficit and completed a Pac-12 sweep of Arizona to clinch at least a share of the conference crown. Trent Chatterton went 1 for 2 with two runs for the Bruins (21-6, 40-12). Cody Poteet (5-1, 1.1 IP, H, BB, K) picked up the win in relief, while David Berg retired the final five batters with four groundouts and a strikeout to record his 12th save. Bobby Dalbec went 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI for the Wildcats (12-18, 28-23).

 

No. 14 UC Santa Barbara 6, UC Irvine 5

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Kyle Plantier had a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth as UC Santa Barbara registered a Big West series sweep of UC Irvine. Robby Nesovic went 1 for 3 with a walk and two runs for the Gauchos (15-6, 39-13-1). Shane Bieber (8-3, 8 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 6 K) earned the victory, while Kyle Nelson recorded the final two outs for his second save.

 

No. 20 Oregon State 12, Stanford 3

In Stanford, Calif., KJ Harrison had a two-run double to cap a three-run fifth as Oregon State completed a Pac-12 sweep at Stanford. Gabe Clark and Elliott Cary both drove in two, Christian Donahue scored three and Joe Gillette had three hits and two runs for the Beavers (17-9-1, 36-14-1). Travis Eckert (6-0, 5.1 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 2 BB) recorded the win. Beau Branton went 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI for the Cardinal (7-20, 22-31).
