Kaprielian and Berg combine on no-hitter for UCLA

NC State nips Louisville, Illinois win streak to 26, Clemson blanks FSU

 

No. 3 UCLA 1, Arizona 0 (10)

In Los Angeles, James Kaprielian and David Berg combined on a no-hitter as UCLA nipped Arizona in the Pac-12 series opener. Kaprielian hurled nine innings of hitless baseball with four walks and 11 strikeouts. Berg (6-1) pitched a perfect 10th with two groundouts and a strikeout to record the victory. The Bruins (19-6, 38-12) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the 10th. Christoph Bono (2 for 3) drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a base hit by Brett Stephens (3 for 5). Kramer delivered a sacrifice fly to center to bring home Bono with the game-winner. Cody Hamlin (8 H, BB, 2 K) pitched 8.1 shutout innings for the Wildcats (12-16, 28-21).

 

NC State 3, No. 2 Louisville 2

In Raleigh, N.C., Brian Brown fanned seven in 5.1 scoreless innings as NC State evened its ACC series with Louisville. Brown (6-3) allowed two hits and walked four. Tommy DeJuneas struck out two in the ninth to record his sixth save. Logan Ratledge had a two-run triple in the third for the Wolfpack (15-13, 31-19). Zach Lucas had a two-run single in the ninth for the Cardinals (24-5, 41-14).

 

No. 5 Illinois 10, Nebraska 9

In Champaign, Ill., Ryan Nagle had a three-run homer to cap a four-run fourth as Illinois secured a Big Ten series win over Nebraska and extended its win streak to 26. Nagle drove in four, while David Kerian went 3 for 4 with a double, a homer, two runs and three RBI for the Illini (21-1, 45-6-1). Drasen Johnson (9-2, 6 IP, 9 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) took the win, while Tyler Jay (1 IP, H, BB, 2 K) recorded his 12th save. Tanner Lubach (2 for 4, 2 R, 3 RBI) went deep for the Cornhuskers (9-14, 34-21).

 

Clemson 7, No. 8 Florida State 0

In Tallahassee, Fla., Zack Erwin and Taylor Ventzel combined on a four-hit shutout as Clemson clinched an ACC series win at Florida State. Erwin (6-4) allowed three hits in six innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Vetzel gave up one hit and one walk over the final three frame with five punchouts. Steven Duggar (2 for 4, 3 R) and Reed Rohlman (2 for 3, 3 RBI) both homered for the Tigers (15-13, 30-25). Chris Marconcini went 1 for 3 with a double for the Seminoles (17-12, 37-18).

 

No. 1 LSU 9, South Carolina 2

In Columbia, S.C., Kade Scivicque had two doubles and drove in three as LSU evened its SEC series at South Carolina. The Tigers (20-8, 45-9) expanded a 2-1 lead with three in the fifth and added two in both the seventh and eighth. Andrew Stevenson went 4 for 5 with two runs and two RBI for LSU. Austin Bain (2-2, 6.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, BB, 7 K) picked up the win. Max Schrock (2 for 4) homered and scored both runs for the Gamecocks (13-16, 32-23).

 

No. 4 TCU 11, Oklahoma 9

In Norman, Okla., Nolan Brown had an RBI double to snap a 7-7 tie in the top of the seventh as TCU clinched a Big 12 series win at Oklahoma. Brown (3 for 5) had a two-run homer in the fourth, joining Jeremie Fagnan (1 for 3, 2 BB, 3 R) and Derek Odell (2 for 5, 2 R) with long balls in the frame for the Horned Frogs (17-5, 42-9). Anthony Hermelyn (2 for 5, 3 RBI) went deep for the Sooners (13-10, 32-24).

 

No. 7 Florida 4, Auburn 3

In Gainesville, Fla., Peter Alonso delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 deadlock as Florida leveled its SEC series with Auburn. Alonso drove in a pair, while Buddy Reed went 2 for 4 with a run for the Gators (18-11, 39-15). Aaron Rhodes (2-0, 3.2 IP, H, BB, 3 K) earned the win in relief, while Kirby Snead retired the final six batters in order, including the last two by strikeout, to register his first save. Melvin Gray went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI for the Tigers (13-16, 34-21).

 

No. 9 Vanderbilt 7, Alabama 5

In Hoover, Ala., Rhett Wiseman and Zander Wiel both drove in two as Vanderbilt clinched an SEC series win at Alabama. The Commodores (20-9, 39-16) scored three in each of its first two at-bats. Tyler Campbell (2 for 4) hit his first homer of the season for Vandy. Jordan Sheffield (5-2, 3 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 3 K) earned the win in relief, while Kyle Wright (2 IP, 3 K) notched his first save. Kyle Overstreet went 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI for the Crimson Tide (11-18, 29-26).

 

No. 10 Miami 22, Georgia Tech 1

In Coral Gables, Fla., David Thompson went 4 for 6 with three homers and nine RBI as Miami pounded Georgia Tech to capture their ACC series. Thompson, who leads the ACC with 18 homers and the nation with 77 RBI, had two-run homers in the first and fifth innings and a grand slam in the eighth. Brandon Lopez had three hits and three RBI, and Zack Collins drove in three for the Hurricanes (21-8, 41-13). Andrew Suarez tossed six innings with one unearned run and six strikeouts for Miami. Tech fell to 13-16, 31-21.

 

Wichita State 10, No. 11 Dallas Baptist 3

In Dallas, Sam Hilliard’s grand slam fueled a five-run sixth inning that broke a tie game as Wichita State evened its MVC series with Dallas Baptist. Ryan Tinkham had a two-run homer that gave the Shockers (10-10, 24-30) a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning. After Justin Wall’s RBI single tied the game at 3 in the bottom half, WSU took the lead on Trey Vickers’ RBI single before Hilliard hit his second homer of the series. Tinkham later added an RBI double, and Bob Arens added a solo homer for the Shockers. The Patriots fell to 14-6, 40-11 and were held in check by Taylor Goshen, Reagan Biechler and Taylor Jones, who combined to allow five hits.

 

No. 12 Oklahoma State 11, Michigan 5

In Ann Arbor, Mich., Donnie Walton went 2 for 4 with a homer, two walks, three runs and two RBI as Oklahoma won at Michigan. The Cowboys (34-16) used a six-run sixth to erase a 5-4 deficit. Dustin Williams went 2 for 2 with four walks, one run and two RBI, while Gage Green had two hits, two runs and two RBI for OSU. Trey Cobb (3-1, 4.1 IP, 4 H, 3 BB, 3 K) earned the win in relief. Jackson Glines went 2 for 3 with a homer, two walks, two runs and two RBI for the Wolverines (32-23).

 

No. 13 Missouri State 9, Bradley 2

In Springfield, Mo., Spencer Johnson went 4 for 4 with three RBI as Missouri State claimed the MVC’s regular-season title by beating Bradley for the second straight day. Eric Cheray went 3 for 3 with two doubles and three RBI for the Bears (17-3, 40-10), who reached 40 wins under coach Keith Guttin for the 10th time after scoring five runs in the first. Jodran Knutson allowed one run over seven innings for MSU. Drew Carlile went 2 for 4 with a run for the Braves (10-10, 32-17).

 

No. 14 UC Santa Barbara 10, UC Irvine 5

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Campbell Wear had a two-run double to erase a 3-2 deficit and spark a seven-run fourth as UC Santa Barbara won the Big West series opener against UC Irvine. Robby Nesovic added a two-run double later in the frame for the Gauchos (13-6, 37-13-1). Cameron Newell went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI for UCSB. Dillon Tate (8-4, 7 IP, 8 H, 5 R, BB, 8 K) earned the victory. Keston Hiura (2 for 4) and John Brontsema both homered for the Anteaters (13-6, 31-19).

 

No. 15 Iowa 10, Rutgers 3

In Piscataway, N.J., Eric Toole had two hits and three RBI, and Blake Hickman improved to 9-1 with five scoreless innings as Iowa evened its Big Ten series with Rutgers. Toole’s three-run triple sparked a six-run second inning for the Hawkeyes (19-4, 38-13). Dan Potempa contributed three hits and two RBI for Iowa. John Jennings went 3 for 3 with a run for the Scarlet Knights (6-17, 18-35-1).

 

Washington State 1, No. 17 Arizona State 0 (10)

In Phoenix, Wes Leow’s 10th-inning RBI single – just the second hit of the game for Washington State – scored P.J. Jones with the game’s only run as the Cougars edged Arizona State to even their Pac-12 series. Joe Pistorese (8-4) tossed nine shutout innings with five hits, four walks and six strikeouts for WSU (10-16, 28-24). Meanwhile, Brett Lilek allowed one hit with four walks and 11 strikeouts in seven innings for the Sun Devils (16-10, 31-19).

 

No. 19 College of Charleston 12, Northeastern 6

In Brookline, Mass., Nick Pappas had three hits and three RBI as the College of Charleston evened its Colonial series at Northeastern. Alex Pastorius (2 for 5, 4 R) and Blake Butler (1 for 4, 3 R) both homered and drove in three for the Cougars (20-3, 40-11). Taylor Clarke (12-1, 6 IP, 4 H, R, BB, 9 K) posted the victory. Michael Foster (2 for 4, 4 RBI) and Rob Fonseca (2 for 4) both went deep for the Huskies (14-9, 24-27).

 

No. 20 Oregon State 5, Stanford 2

In Stanford, Calif., Michael Gretler had a two-run single to cap a three-run fifth as Oregon State won its Pac-12 series opener at Stanford. KJ Harrison (2 for 5, 2 RBI) homered earlier in the fifth for the Beavers (15-9, 34-14-1). Luke Heimlich (2 IP, 3 H, K) earned his fourth save, while Andrew Moore (6-2, 5.2 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 4 BB, 5 K). Drew Jackson went 4 for 5 with a double and a run for the Cardinal (7-18, 22-29).

 

MEAC Tournament

S2 Bethune-Cookman 13, N3 Delaware State 0 (DSU eliminated)

S2 Bethune-Cookman 12, N1 Norfolk State 1 (NSU eliminated)

In Salisbury, Md., Bethune-Cookman advanced to the championship round of the MEAC Tournament by eliminating Delaware State. The Wildcats (19-39) must defeat Florida A&M twice on Saturday to recapture the crown. German Hernandez (1-2) allowed one hit over five innings with two walks and four strikeouts to earn the victory. B-CU scored twice in the first, third and fourth before putting the game away with seven in the fifth. Austin Garcia had three hits and three RBI, while Nathan Bond went 4 for 4 with a double, four runs and one RBI. David Kimbrough went 1 for 2 and was hit by a pitch for the Hornets (16-29).

 

In the day's earlier game, Alex Seibold fanned 10 over six innings as Bethune-Cookman eliminated Norfolk State. Seibold (5-5) allowed three hits, two walks and one run. The Wildcats blew open a 4-1 game with eight runs in the eighth. Bryant Buno went 3 for 5 with a double, two runs and two RBI for the Wildcats. Angel Rosario had two hits for the Spartans (27-16).

W2 Southern 6, E3 Jackson State 5 (JSU eliminated)

W1 Texas Southern 10, E4 Alcorn State 0 (ASU eliminated)

In New Orleans, Jose DeLaTorre had an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth as Southern edged Jackson State to advance to Sunday's Championship Game. Gavin Webster (2 for 3) had a two-run double to cap a three-run eighth for the Jaguars (20-22). Gary Thomas went 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI for the Tigers (32-25).

 

Earlier in the day, Jesus Santana had a two-run homer to cap a four-run eighth as Jackson State eliminated Alabama State. Jovany Felipe had a two-run double earlier in the eighth for the Tigers. Vincent Anthonia (5-3, 3 H, UE, 7 BB, 6 K) went the distance for JSU. Joseph Estrada scored the lone run for the Hornets (31-19).

 

Ryan Rios tossed seven scoreless innings as Texas Southern blanked Alcorn State. Rios (6-1) allowed three hits and a walk with seven strikeouts. Blake Hicks homered and drove in two for the Tigers (28-17). Scotty Peavey and LaDerrick Williams both had doubles for the Braves (16-41). TSU must beat Grambling State twice on Saturday to advance to Sunday's title game.
