Hale helps LSU top MSU in 14

OSU nips UW in 10, Arkansas wins at Alabama, Pacific edges BYU

 

No. 1 LSU 5, Mississippi State 3 (14)

In Starkville, Miss., Conner Hale delivered a two-run double in the top of the 14th to lift LSU over Mississippi State in the SEC series opener. Jake Fraley (3 for 6) drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second. Alex Bregman (2 for 4, 2 R, 3 BB) was intentionally walked and both runners moved up on a wild pitch. Hale (2 for 7) doubled to right center to give the Tigers (15-6, 39-7) a 5-3 advantage. Jesse Stallings retired the Bulldogs (7-15, 23-23) in order in the bottom of the 14th for his 12th save. Luke Reynolds (3 for 5, 2 R) singled and scored the tying run in the bottom of the ninth for MSU, but the Bulldogs left the bases loaded to force extra innings. MSU also stranded a pair in the 10th and 11th.

 

Oregon State 4, Washington 2 (10)

In Seattle, Elliott Cary had a two-run single in the top of the 10th as Oregon State edged Washington to kick off their Pac-12 series. Mitch Hickey took over on the mound in the bottom of the 10th for the Beavers (11-8, 28-13) and surrendered a leadoff double to Schmidt. But three straight strikeouts gave Hickey his seventh save. Austin Rei had a two-run homer in the seventh for the Huskies (8-14, 23-20).

 

Arkansas 5, Alabama 1

In Hoover, Ala., Michael Bernal had a two-run homer in the seventh to help Arkansas defeat Alabama in their SEC series lid-lifter. Andrew Benintendi and Brett McAfee both had two hits and a run for the Razorbacks (12-10, 27-18). Trey Killian (2-3, 6.1 IP, 7 H, R, BB) fanned nine in recording the victory, while Zach Jackson (2.2 IP, H, BB, 5 K) recorded his fifth save. Kyle Overstreet had an RBI double in the sixth for the Crimson Tide (8-14, 23-22).

 

Pacific 4, BYU 3

In Stockton, Calif., Brett Sullivan had two extra base hits to lead Pacific past BYU to open their WCC series. Sullivan had an RBI double in third and homered in the fourth for the Tigers (7-12, 10-32). Jake Jenkins (3-6, 7 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K) earned the victory and Vince Arobio fanned four of the five batters he faced to record his seventh save. Dillon Robinson had a two-run homer in the first for the Cougars (11-8, 22-20).

 

Maine 18, Lafayette 10

In Easton, Pa., Steven Adam had three hits, two runs and three RBI as Maine outscored Lafayette. The Black Bears (17-22) put up crooked numbers in six of their nine at-bats, including four in the second, fourth and sixth. Luke Morrill (3 for 6, 2 R, 2 RBI) and Kevin Stypulkowski (2 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI) both doubled twice for Maine. Tim Lazor (3 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI) was a triple short of the cycle for the Leopards (11-24-1).
