Barrett ends Iowa marathon vs. Sacramento State in 18

LBSU nips UCLA, Belmont upsets Vandy, LSU downs Alcorn State

 

No. 18 Iowa 4, Sacramento State 3 (18)

In Iowa City, Iowa, John Barrett delivered a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 18th as Iowa outlasted Sacramento State. Eric Toole (3 for 8, 2 R, RBI) had a leadoff single in the 18th for the Hawkeyes (31-11) and advanced to third on a one-out single by Kris Goodman. Barrett sent a fly ball to center deep enough to plate Toole with the game-winner. The Hornets (22-22) scored in the top of the 12th as Nathan Lukes (3 for 9) had a leadoff double and came home on a sac fly by Brandon Hunley. Iowa answered in the bottom of the frame as pinch-hitter Sean Moore reached on an error and pinch-runner Corbin Woods scored on an error. Devin Lehman had four hits for CSUS. The Hornets stranded 20 and the Hawkeyes left 19 on base.

 

Long Beach State 2, No. 2 UCLA 1 (13)

In Long Beach, Calif., Brock Lundquist knocked in the game-winner in the bottom of the 13th as Long Beach State edged UCLA. Joey Sanchez reached second on an error with one away in the 13th for the Dirtbags (23-17). He moved to third on a groundout and came home on a base hit up the middle by Lundquist. Daniel Jackson finished with two hits and one RBI for LBSU. Darren McCaughan (2-2) fanned three in the top of the 13th to pick up the win. Ryan Cruz went eight innings in the start for the Dirtbags and allowed two hits and one run with two walks and three strikeouts. Kevin Kramer had two hits for the Bruins (31-10).

 

Belmont 4, No. 6 Vanderbilt 1

In Nashville, Tenn., Patrick McGrath allowed one run over 7.2 innings as Belmont knocked off Vanderbilt. McGrath (6-3) gave up four hits and a walk with five strikeouts. Matthew Kinney worked the final 1.1 innings with one hit, two walks and three strikeouts to record his fifth save. Matt Beaty snapped a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the sixth and added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth for the Bruins (22-21). Alec Diamond had two hits and two runs for Belmont. Jason Delay went 2 for 4 with a run for the Commodores (33-13).

 

No. 1 LSU 6, Alcorn State 1

In Baton Rouge, La., Danny Zardon had a two-run single in a three-run fourth and a sacrifice fly in a three-run eighth as LSU took care of Alcorn State. Chris Chinea and Andrew Stevenson each had two hits and two runs for the Tigers (38-7). Seven LSU pitchers combined on the two-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Scotty Peavey (2 for 4) homered for the Braves (11-37).

 

No. 3 Louisville 2, Kentucky 1 (10)

In Louisville, Ky., Nick Solak drove in the tying run with a base hit in the ninth and Blake Tiberi brought home the game-winner with a pinch-hit single in the 10th as Louisville rallied past Kentucky. The Cardinals (35-10) had just one hit through the first eight innings. Evan White had an RBI single in the third for the Wildcats (25-18).
