Freeman pitches Oklahoma State to series win at TCU

FSU throttles Virginia, Oregon tops ASU, South Carolina wins at Missouri

 

Oklahoma State 7, No. 1 TCU 2

In Fort Worth, Texas, Michael Freeman hurled a six-hitter as Oklahoma State won the Big 12 series at TCU. Freeman (4-0) allowed two runs (one earned) with one walk and nine strikeouts. Corey Hassel (3 for 4, R) had a three-run double and Jacob Chappell (1 for 3) knocked in two with a two-bagger in a six-run third for the Cowboys (2-1, 16-7). Keaton Jones went 2 for 4 with a run for the Horned Frogs (4-2, 17-4).

 

No. 12 Florida State 13, No. 10 Virginia 1

In Charlottesville, Va., D.J. Stewart went 3 for 4 with two homers, four runs and six RBI to lead Florida State to an ACC series win at Virginia. Stewart walked and scored in a four-run first and in the fifth. He belted a grand slam to cap a five-run seventh and hit a two-run shot in a three-run ninth for the Seminoles (7-2, 19-6). Dylan Busby (1 for 2, 2 R) homered and drove in three, while Quincy Nieporte (3 for 5, 2B) knocked in a pair for FSU. Cobi Johnson (3-1, 7 IP, 5 H, R, 2 BB, 5 K) recorded the victory. Matt Thaiss went 2 for 2 with one RBI for the Cavaliers (3-6, 14-7).

 

No. 16 Oregon 5, No. 14 Arizona State 1

In Eugene, Ore., Matt Eureste had a two-run triple to cap a three-run second as Oregon salvaged the finale of its Pac-12 series against Arizona State. Cole Irvin (1-1, 5.2 IP, 4 H, R, BB, 5 K) recorded the victory for the Ducks (2-4, 15-8). Trever Allen went 2 for 4 for the Sun Devils (4-2, 15-7).

 

No. 6 South Carolina 7, Missouri 5

In Columbia, Mo., Kyle Martin went 4 for 5 with a double and a run as South Carolina salvaged the finale of its SEC series at Missouri. Gene Cone (2 for 4, 3B, R) and Max Schrock (2 for 6, 2B, R) both drove in two for the Gamecocks (4-2, 18-6). Brandon Murray (2-0, 5.1 IP, H, R, 2 BB, 2 K) earned the win in relief, while Vince Fiori (2 IP, H, R, 2 BB, 2 K) notched his first save. Zach Lavy (1 for 4, 2B) and Trey Harris (1 for 3, 2B) both knocked in a pair for the Tigers (5-1, 18-6).

 

No. 7 UCLA 11, Utah 2

In Los Angeles, Christoph Bono went 3 for 4 with two triples and four RBI as UCLA completed a three-game Pac-12 sweep of Utah. The Bruins (5-1, 17-5) scored two in the second, four in the fourth and four in the fifth to build a 10-2 lead. Trent Chatterton scored twice and knocked in three, while Ty Moore went 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI for UCLA. Griffin Canning (4-1, 5.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 3 K) picked up the win. AJ Young had two doubles, a homer and two RBI for the Utes (2-4, 7-15).

 

No. 8 Rice 5, Old Dominion 4

In Norfolk, Va., Tristan Gray had an RBI double in the top of the eighth to snap a 4-4 tie as Rice salvaged the finale of its Conference USA series at Old Dominion. Matt Ditman allowed two hits over the final two scoreless innings with three strikeouts to record his fourth save. Jordan Stephens (2-1, 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 R, ER, 6 K) earned the win in relief. Leon Byrd had a two-run double in the third and Ryan Chandler (2 for 4, R) added a two-run triple in the fourth as the Owls (7-2, 16-9) built a 4-0 lead. Josh Eldridge had a pair of sacrifice flies for the Monarchs (3-3, 12-8).

 

No. 9 USC 9, Cal Poly 2

In San Luis Obispo, Calif., Mitch Hart allowed one run over seven innings as USC claimed a series victory at Cal Poly. Hart (5-0) scattered four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. The Trojans (19-5) scored four in the first and three in the second to take control. Bobby Stahel went 2 for 3 with a double, one run and two RBI, while Garrett Stubbs went 3 for 5 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI for USC. Peter Van Gansen had three hits and Brett Barbier homered for the Mustangs (7-13).

 

No. 11 UCF 18, Presbyterian 4

In Orlando, Fla., Kyle Marsh went 2 for 4 with a double, two runs and three RBI as UCF won its series against Presbyterian. James Vazquez (2 for 5, HR, 2 R) and Brooks Morgan (1 for 3, 3 R) both had two-run doubles in a seven-run first for the Knights (20-5). Jay Lizanich went 1 for 4 with a double and one RBI for the Blue Hose (15-9).

 

No. 13 Louisville 3, Notre Dame 0

In Notre Dame, Ind., Josh Rogers tossed 7.1 scoreless innings with six strikeouts as Louisville completed an ACC series sweep at Notre Dame. Rogers (3-1) allowed six hits and two walks. Drew Harrington fanned two over the final 1.1 innings to record his fourth save. Sutton Whiting (2 for 5) doubled and scored in the first for the Cardinals (8-1, 18-6). Zak Kutsulis had two hits for the Irish (3-6, 15-7).

 

Oklahoma 3, No. 15 Texas Tech 2

In Norman, Okla., Robert Tasin tossed 5.1 innings of scoreless relief as Oklahoma won its Big 12 series against Texas Tech. Tasin (4-1) entered with a run in and the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the first. He recorded a strikeout, a popout and a groundout to keep it at 1-0. Tasin allowed two hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Jacob Evans (2.2 IP, BB, 3 K) earned his second save. The Sooners (2-1, 17-9) scored single runs in the first, third and fifth. Taylor Alspaugh went 4 for 4 with a double, a run and an RBI for OU. Stephen Smith went 2 for 3 with a double, two walks and a run for the Red Raiders (1-2, 16-8).

 

No. 17 Texas 6, Kansas State 1

In Austin, Texas, Kacy Clemens and two relievers combined on a two-hitter as Texas completed a Big 12 sweep of Kansas State. Clemens (2-1) allowed two hits in five innings with one run, three walks and one strikeout. Travis Duke worked 1.1 innings before Connor Mayes pitched the final 2.2 innings with two strikeouts for his first save. Collin Shaw had a two-run homer to cap a three-run fifth for the Longhorns (5-1, 16-8). Ben Johnson had two doubles and two RBI for UT. Clayton Dalrymple went 1 for 3 with one RBI for the Wildcats (0-3, 11-12).

 

Wake Forest 10, No. 18 Miami 4

In Winston-Salem, N.C., Nate Mondou drove in four as Wake Forest avoided the ACC sweep at the hands of Miami. The Demon Deacons (4-5, 15-10) scored multiple runs in four different frames, including three in the fourth and three in the eighth. Mondou had two hits, including a double, and two runs, while Gavin Sheets added two hits and two RBI for WFU. Parker Dunshee (4-0, 6.2 IP, 6 H, R, BB, 3 K) earned the win in relief. Ricky Eusebio had two hits and a run for the Hurricanes (6-3, 18-7).

 

No. 19 UC Santa Barbara 10, Dartmouth 1

In Santa Barbara, Calif., Campbell Wear homered and drove in a pair as UC Santa Barbara thumped Dartmouth. Luke Swenson and Robby Nesovic both had two hits and two runs for the Gauchos (16-6). Shane Bieber (4-2, 7.2 IP, 4 H, UE, 5 K) earned the victory. Nick Ruppert had two hits for the Big Green (1-14).

 

USF 8, No. 20 Illinois 5 (10)

In Champaign, Ill., Levi Borders had a two-run double in the top of the 10th as USF avoided the sweep at Illinois. Borders went 4 for 5 with two runs and three RBI, while Luke Borders had four hits and two RBI for the Bulls (16-8-1). Buddy Putnam had a three-run homer in a five-run third for USF. Reid Roper knocked in three for the Illini (17-5-1).
