Whitter Shines in Relief as Texas State Nips Houston

Vanderbilt outscores Western Kentucky, Miami edges Barry

 

Texas State 7, No. 6 Houston 6

In San Marcos, Texas, Blake Whitter allowed one run over 4.1 innings of relief as Texas State edged Houston. Colby Targun and Cody Lovejoy each had two hits and a run for the Bobcats (2-5-1). Chris Iriart went 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI, and Kyle Survance went 2 for 4 with two runs and two RBI for the Cougars (6-2).

 

No. 2 Vanderbilt 10, Western Kentucky 6

In Nashville, Tenn., Zander Wiel blasted a grand slam in the seventh inning and finished with five RBI as Vanderbilt rallied from a 6-1 deficit to beat Western Kentucky. The Hilltoppers (2-5) scored five times in the first two innings and were led by Anderson Miller (2 H, 3 R), Philip Diedrick (2 H, 2 RBI) and Danny Hudzina (2 RBI). But the Commodores (6-2) scored nine runs in their final four at-bats to rally. Dansby Swanson contributed two runs and two RBI for Vanderbilt.

 

No. 13 Miami 5, Barry 3

In Coral Gables, Fla., Danny Garcia tossed 7.2 innings with one earned run, six hits and nine strikeouts as Miami got past Barry. David Thompson had two RBI as the Hurricanes (5-3) scored five runs in the first two innings, but were shut down to the tune of only two hits the rest the way by the Buccaneers (6-6). JC Cardenas went 2 for 3 with a triple, run and RBI for Barry, which scored single runs in the final three innings before Brian Garcia closed the door for his second save.

 

No. 19 Louisville 5, Eastern Kentucky 2

In Louisville, Ky., Sutton Whiting stayed hot with two hits and an RBI, and Brendan McKay drove in two and later earned his first collegiate save as Louisville topped Eastern Kentucky. Whiting, who is hitting .500, had an RBI single in the fifth for a 2-1 lead, and McKay added insurance runs with a two-out, two-run single in the seventh. Devin Hariston added two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals (5-3). Shea Sullivan went 3 for 3 with a double and two runs to lead the Colonels (3-4).

 

No. 20 UCF 18, Bethune-Cookman 8

In Daytona Beach, Fla., Tommy Williams had three hits and three RBI, and JoMarcos Woods added a pair of hits and three RBI as UCF used an eight-run fourth to break away from Bethune-Cookman. The Knights (8-0) tied the best start in school history by totaling 19 hits and scoring in seven of nine innings. Matt Divoro (3 for 4, 3 R, 2 RBI) and Jordan Savinon (3 for 4, 2 R, 2 RBI) also had big nights for the Knights. Rakeem Quinn went 2 for 4 with two runs and an RBI, and Jameel Edney added two RBI for the Wildcats (0-9).

 

No. 9 Texas 5, UT Pan American 4

In Austin, Texas, Bret Boswell went 3 for 5 with a double, run and two RBI, including the game-winning single up the middle with two outs in the bottom of the ninth as Texas slipped past UTPA. Parker Gallegos limited the Longhorns (8-2) to two runs (one earned) in 6.1 innings with five strikeouts as the Broncs held a 4-2 lead after seven innings. Boswell doubled in a run and scored on a grounder to tie the game at 4 in the eighth before his clutch hit gave Texas the win. Manny Loredo went 3 for 4 with an RBI for UTPA.
