Thompson pitches Auburn past Georgia Tech

Vanderbilt tops UT Martin; Mississippi State handles Alcorn State

 

Auburn 7, Georgia Tech 1

In Auburn, Ala., Keegan Thompson allowed six hits and one earned run and struck out nine in seven brilliant innings as Auburn knocked off Georgia Tech. Blake Logan went 3 for 4 with two runs, and Damon Haecker and Kyler Deese each had two RBI for the Tigers (7-2). Leadoff man Anfernee Grier added two hits and two runs to extend his hitting streak to 11 games for Auburn. The Yellow Jackets fell to 5-3.

 

No. 2 Vanderbilt 16, UT Martin 3

In Nashville, Tenn., Dansby Swanson drove in four, and Jason Delay and Liam Sabino also had big nights as Vanderbilt trounced UT Martin. The Commodores scored eight times in the third inning, with Delay (2 for 4, 2 R, 3 RBI) driving in two with a single and Swanson plating three with a triple. Sabino went 3 for 5 with three runs for the Commodores (5-2). Nico Zych went 3 for 5 with a run, and Jake Deason drove in two for the Skyhawks (1-7).

 

No. 15 Mississippi State 10, Alcorn State 2

In Starkville, Miss., Ryan Gridley posted his fourth multi-hit game and raised his average to .591 by totaling four hits and driving in two as Mississippi State improved to 9-0 with a win over Alcorn State. Jake Vickerson added two hits and two RBI, and Jacob Robson, CBI’s co-national player of the week for the first week of the season, added two hits and two runs for the Bulldogs, who broke from a 4-2 game with three in the sixth and three in the seventh. Jesse McCord (1-0) allowed two earned runs and struck out six in 5.2 innings. Dervincent Hamilton homered for the Braves (3-5).

 

No. 19 Louisville 10, Butler 1

In Louisville, Ky., Corey Ray and Nick Solak each drove in three as Louisville coasted past Butler. Ray went 2 for 3 with a double and stolen base, and Solak contributed two hits, a run and a stolen base for the Cardinals (4-3). Leadoff man Sutton Whiting went 3 for 3 with a run, two stolen bases and an RBI as Louisville built a 6-0 lead after four innings. Kade McClure tossed five scoreless innings with three hits and four strikeouts for Louisville. Ryan Wojciechowski went 2 for 4 for the Bulldogs (0-7).

 

McNeese State 5, Louisiana 4 (17 innings)

In Lafayette, La., Connor Lloyd singled in Connor Crane as McNeese State edged Louisiana in 17 innings. Austin Briggs retired the final two batters in the 17th for his first save, ending the five-hour, 16-minute contest and keeping Ragin’ Cajuns coach Tony Robichaux at win No. 999 for his career. Lloyd finished 3 for 6 for the Cowboys (5-4), while Blake Trahan went 3 for 6 for the Cajuns (4-4).

 

No. 7 UCLA 1, Long Beach State 0

In Los Angeles, Kevin Kramer hit a solo homer, and Griffin Canning allowed three hits and struck out six as UCLA edged Long Beach State. David Berg closed with a perfect ninth for his first save of the season for the Bruins (7-1). Ryan Cruz (0-1) limited UCLA to two hits over six splendid innings, and Eric Hutting had two hits for the Dirtbags (5-3).

 

Stanford 6, Nevada 5

In Stanford, Calif., Matt Winaker’s double scored Jonny Locher with the game-winning run as Stanford handed Nevada its first loss of the season. Winaker finished 2 for 5 with two RBI, and Alex Dunlap added three hits and an RBI for the Cardinal (4-4). Ryan Howell went 2 for 4 with his third homer and three RBI Nevada (7-1).

 

Georgia 3, Presbyterian 0

In Athens, Ga., Sean McLaughlin tossed five scoreless innings with two hits and five strikeouts as Georgia blanked Presbyterian. Zach Bowers led the Bulldogs (6-1) with two hits and two RBI, and Stephen Wrenn scored twice. Cam McRae had two hits for Presbyterian (6-3).

 

Tulane 9, New Orleans 0

In New Orleans, Patrick Duester allowed three hits over six scoreless innings as Tulane stayed hot by topping New Orleans. Stephen Alemais had three hits, two runs and an RBI, and John Gandolfo went 3 for 4 with a run and two RBI for the Green Wave (7-1). Ryan Calloway went 2 for 3 for UNO (4-4).

 

Cal State Northridge 10, Grand Canyon 1

In Northridge, Calif., Conor O’Neil, who has been closing games, allowed two hits and struck out six in 6.1 scoreless innings as Cal State Northridge handed Grand Canyon its first loss. Nick Murphy had a triple and three RBI, and Justin Toerner added a two-run homer for the Matadors (9-1). Chester Pak and Yusuke Akitoshi each had three hits and a run for Northridge. David Walker had an RBI for the Lopes (7-1).
