Dunning helps Florida edge Miami to win series

TCU nips Arizona State, Virginia outlasts Marist in 18 innings

 

Indiana State 8, No. 1 Vanderbilt 1

In Port Charlotte, Fla., Jeff Degano allowed a first-inning run and little more in tossing seven brilliant innings, and Indiana State used a seven-run sixth inning to upend Vanderbilt. Degano (2-0) allowed six hits and struck out five, and he and Michael Eberle yielded only one base runner over the final six innings. Landon Curry and Tyler Friis each had two RBI, and Jeff Zahn had two hits and two runs for the Sycamores (3-2). Zander Wiel had two hits and an RBI for the Commodores (3-2). Vanderbilt pitchers combined to allow 10 hits, walk seven and hit one batter in throwing 193 pitches as a staff.

 

No. 16 Arizona State 7, No. 3 TCU 6

In Phoenix, Ariz., RJ Ybarra went 3 for 4 with a homer, two runs and three RBI, and Ryan Kellogg worked into the eighth inning as Arizona State held off TCU to even their series. The Sun Devils (4-2) scored four times in the third inning, three coming on Ybarra’s homer, to take a 5-3 lead. Kellogg (2-0) allowed five earned runs in 7.2 innings. Zack Plunkett hit a three-run homer as the Frogs (5-1) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Ryan Burr posted his third save by stranding the tying run at third base.

 

No. 10 Miami 7, No. 4 Florida 2

In Gainesville, Fla., Zack Collins went 2 for 4 with a  three-run homer and two runs, and Thomas Woodrey allowed one earned runs in 6.2 innings as Miami evened its series with Florida. The Hurricanes (5-2) held a 3-0 lead when Collins’ three-run shot made it 6-0 in the fourth inning. Woodrey (2-0) allowed five hits and turned it over to Derik Beauprez, who closed with 2.1 scoreless innings. JJ Schwarz had a solo homer for the Gators (5-1).

 

No. 15 North Carolina 9, No. 7 UCLA 6

In Orlando, Wood Myers had three hits as North Carolina outscored UCLA to even their series. The Tar Heels (4-1) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good at 5-4. Zack Gahagan had a two-run single in the seventh for UNC. Ty Moore went 4 for 5 with two runs and one RBI for the Bruins (5-1).

 

No. 2 Virginia 8, La Salle 3

In Charleston, S.C., Ernie Clement had three hits, including a solo homer, and two runs, and Connor Jones allowed two unearned runs and struck out six as Virginia topped La Salle. The Cavaliers (5-0) played Marist later in the day. Daniel Pinero (2 RBI) and Pavin Smith also homered for Virginia, which broke from a 5-3 with a run in the sixth and two more in the eighth. Mark Williams went 2 for 4 with a solo homer, and Cameron Johnson had two hits and two RBI for the Explorers (2-3).

 

No. 5 LSU 16, Boston College 2

In Baton Rouge, La., Kade Scivicque went 3 for 4 with a homer, three runs and three RBI, and Alex Bregman added three hits, including two doubles and a homer, and four RBI as LSU completed a three-game sweep by routing Boston College. Andrew Stevenson had two triples, two runs and an RBI, and Bryce Jordan added a double and two runs off the bench for the Tigers (6-1), who scored in all but one inning and finished with 21 hits. Jake Godfrey (1-0) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, allowing one earned run in five innings. Chris Shaw had a solo homer for the Eagles (2-5).

 

No. 6 Houston 14, Alabama 9

In Houston, the Houston Cougars scored six in the seventh to erase a 9-5 deficit on its way to a win over Alabama. Ian Rice and Ashford Fulmer both had two-run singles in that six-run seventh for the Cougars (6-0). Josh Vidales drove in three, while Zac Taylor had three hits and three runs for UH. Bubba Maxwell (2-0, 3 IP, 6 H, 1 UE, 4 K) earned the victory. Casey Hughston (3 for 5, 2 R) homered for the Crimson Tide (3-2).

 

No. 8 Texas Tech 6-6, Northern Illinois 4-0

In Lubbock, Texas, Dylan Dusek tossed six scoreless innings in the first game, and Ty Damron followed with six scoreless innings in the second game as Texas Tech completed a four-game sweep of Northern Illinois. The Red Raiders (8-1) allowed four runs in the last inning of the first game Saturday, marking the only inning of36 that the Huskies (3-4) scored in the four-game series. In the first game, Tim Proudfoot paced the Red Raiders with two hits and two runs. Brian Sisler went 3 for 5 with two RBI for NIU. Tanner Gardner went 3 for 4 with a homer, two runs and two RBI for Texas Tech in the second game.

 

No. 9 Texas 5, Minnesota 0

In Austin, Texas, Chad Hollingsworth and Ty Culbreth combined on a four-hit shutout, and Tres Barrera had a double, triple and two runs as Longwood blanked Minnesota. Hollingsworth (1-0) allowed two hits and struck out five in 6.1 innings, and Culbreth closed with two hits over the final 2.2 innings. Brooks Marlow added two hits, including a homer, and two RBI for the Longhorns (6-2).

 

Arkansas State 4-8, No. 11 Louisville 4-14

In Emerson, Ga., Tyler Zuber tossed eight scoreless innings in the opener as Arkansas State split a doubleheader with Louisville to clinch a series win. Zuber (1-0) allowed two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Ty White drove in a pair for the Red Wolves (4-2). Corey Ray had two hits and a run for the Cardinals (3-3). In the nightcap, Ray went 3 for 5 with a homer, three runs and four RBI to lead the UL attack. Zach George had three hits, including a home run, and two RBI for ASU.

 

No. 12 South Carolina 10-6, Northeastern 1-0

In Columbia, S.C., Will Crowe and three relievers combined on a shutout in the nightcap as South Carolina swept a doubleheader from Northeastern. Crowe allowed four hits in four innings with seven strikeouts. Vince Fiori (1-0, 2 IP, 2 H, K), Reed Scott (2 IP, BB, K) and Tyler Haswell (1 IP) completed the shutout. Gene Cone went 3 for 3, while Kyle Martin drove in a pair for the Gamecocks (5-1). Josh Treff and Pat Madigan both had two hits for the Huskies (2-3). In the opener, Jordan Gore had two hits and three RBI for South Carolina. Jack Wynkoop (1-1, 8 IP, 3 H, R, BB) fanned nine to earn the win. Gave Levanti went 1 for 4 with one RBI for NU.

 

No. 13 Oklahoma State 10, Utah 2

In Mesa, Ariz., Dustin Williams had three hits, including a homer, and scored three times as Oklahoma State stopped Utah. The Cowboys (3-3) scored a pair in the top of the third to erase a 1-0 deficit and added two in the fifth, four in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Kevin Bradley (2 for 3, 2 R) and Jacob Chappell (2 for 3, R) both drove in two for OSU. Andre Jackson went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBI for the Utes (1-6).

 

Arizona 7, No. 14 Rice 6

In Tucson, Ariz., Kevin Newman stole home to cap a two-run rally in the bottom of the ninth as Arizona evened its series with Rice. The Owls (4-3) committed four errors in the ninth to lead to the two runs for the Wildcats (6-1). Riley Moore (2 for 4, 2 RBI) and Bobby Dalbec hit consecutive homers in the third for Arizona. Connor Teykl had two hits and two RBI for Rice.

 

Georgia 4-10, No. 17 Florida State 1-5

In Athens, Ga., Georgia earned a series victory over Florida State by sweeping a doubleheader. In the opener, Ryan Lawlor (2-0, 6 IP, 4 H, R, BB) matched his career best with 10 strikeouts in recording the win. Jared Cheek worked a hitless ninth for his first save. Jared Walsh had a two-run homer in the fourth and a RBI double in the eighth for the Bulldogs (5-1). Ben DeLuzio went 2 for 4 with a run for the Seminoles (4-3). In Game 2, Keegan McGovern went 3 for 3 with a homer, two runs, two RBI and two walks. Trevor Kieboom had three hits, including a home run, and three runs for the Bulldogs. DJ Stewart went 2 for 3 with a homer, two runs, two RBI and two walks for FSU.

 

UCF 7, No. 18 Maryland 6

In Mobile, Ala., UCF built a 5-0 lead and held on to edge Maryland. Dylan Moore had three hits and three runs, while Erik Barber drove in three for the Knights (6-0). The Terrapins (4-1) scored twice in the top of the ninth to pull within one, but left the bases loaded to end the game. Tim Lewis went 2 for 3 with two walks and two RBI for Maryland.

 

No. 19 Mississippi State 18, Alabama A&M 2

In Starkville, Miss., Ryan Gridley had a three-run inside-the-park homer to highlight a nine-run second as Mississippi State overwhelmed Alabama A&M in a battle of Bulldogs. Brent Rooker (3 for 5, 2 R) drove in five for the home Bulldogs (6-0). Austin Sexton (1-0, 6 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 8 K) earned the victory. Julio Nunez homered for the visiting Bulldogs (2-4).

 

No. 20 Oregon 22, New Mexico State 7

In Eugene, Ore., Matt Eureste and Austin Grebeck both had four hits, three runs and five RBI as Oregon crushed New Mexico State. The Aggies (0-7) scored twice in the top of the first before the Ducks (6-1) registered five multi-run innings, including seven in the sixth. Derek Umphres went 3 for 4 with two runs for NMSU.
