TCU's Morrison shuts out Arizona State

Florida nips Miami, Arkansas State surprises Louisville, UCLA edges UNC

 

No. 3 TCU 3, No. 16 Arizona State 0

In Phoenix, Ariz., Preston Morrison was masterful, tossing a complete-game, three-hit shutout on only 87 pitches at TCU blanked Arizona State. Morrison (2-0) had a 0.87 ERA in his final 12 starts of 2014 and has started 2015 with 16 scoreless innings. He walked one and struck out five. Evan Skoug went 2 for 4 with a run for the Frogs (5-0). Brett Lilek (0-1) allowed six hits and two runs (one earned) and struck out seven in six innings for the Sun Devils (3-2).

 

No. 4 Florida 4, No. 10 Miami 3

In Gainesville, Fla., Buddy Reed’s bloop single scored Josh Tobias with the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth as Florida got past Miami in the first of their three-game set. Reed finished 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI, and Mike Rivera had two RBI for the Gators (5-0). Taylor Lewis (1-0) tossed 1.1 innings of hitless relief for Florida. David Thompson went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI for the Hurricanes (4-2).

 

Arkansas State 8, No. 11 Louisville 2

In Emerson, Ga., Joe Schrimpf and Austin Baker had two-run singles as part of a six-run third inning as Arkansas State roughed up Kyle Funkhouser and Louisville. Funkhouser (1-1) hit two batters and walked another to load the bases in the third to set up Schrimpf, whose single to center made it 3-0. Later in the inning, Baker grounded a ball through the middle for a 6-0 lead before Ty White, who had an infield RBI single earlier in the inning, scored on an error to make it 7-0. David Owen (1-1) allowed two earned runs in 5.2 innings to earn the win for the Red Wolves (3-1). Funkhouser allowed seven runs (four earned) and seven hits in 4.2 innings with seven strikeouts. Sutton Whiting and Nick Solak each had two hits and an RBI for the Cardinals (2-2).

 

No. 7 UCLA 8, No. 15 North Carolina 5

In Orlando, James Kaprielian tossed six solid innings, and Brett Stephens scored three times as UCLA got past North Carolina in a game that featured 11 errors. Kaprielian (2-0) allowed seven hits and three earned runs and struck out seven for the Bruins (5-0). Luke Persico went 3 for 6 with a run and two RBI, and Kevin Kramer added two hits and two runs for UCLA, which scored in six of nine innings. Skye Bolt and Tyler Ramirez homered for the Tar Heels (3-1), who made six errors. The series was shifted from UNC to Orlando because of poor weather conditions.  

 

No. 1 Vanderbilt 3, Indiana State 2

In Port Charlotte, Fla., Rhett Wiseman’s bases-loaded single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth plated Tyler Campbell with the winning run as Vanderbilt slipped past Indiana State. Wiseman finished with two hits and drove in all three runs for the Commodores (3-1). The Sycamores (2-2) loaded the bases with one walk with three walks from Jordan Sheffield. Ben Bowden relieved and escaped the jam with a strikeout and ground out. Carson Fullmer allowed two runs and struck out six in five innings, totaling 94 pitches. Landon Curry went 2 for 4, and Jeremy McKinney allowed only one hit and struck out four in 3.1 innings of relief for the Sycamores.

 

No. 2 Virginia 9, Marist 1

In Charleston, S.C., Kenny Towns had three hits and three RBI, and Pavin Smith homered and drove in three as Virginia coasted past Marist in a game played at Bishop England High School because of poor weather in Charlottesville, Va. Daniel Pinero went 2 for 3 with four runs for the Cavaliers (4-0). Nathan Kirby (2-0) allowed three hits and one earned run and struck out nine to post the win. Mark Brennan went 2 for 4 with a solo homer for the Red Foxes (0-1).

 

No. 5 LSU 8, Boston College 3

In Baton Rouge, La., Danny Zardon went 3 for 4 with two doubles, a homer and three RBI as LSU pulled away from Boston College in the first game of a doubleheader. Andrew Stevenson contributed two hits, including a triple, and two runs, and Conner Hale added two hits and a run for the Tigers (4-1). Jared Poche’ allowed two earned runs in 5.2 innings to improve to 2-0. Blake Butera went 3 for 5 with a run, and Chris Shaw had two RBI for the Eagles (2-3).

 

No. 6 Houston 3, Alabama 1

In Houston, Chris Iriart belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 1-0 deficit and carry Houston past Alabama. Andrew Lantrip (2-0, 7 IP, 7 H, R, BB, 5 K) earned the victory, while Seth Romero (1.2 IP, H, K) recorded his second save for the Cougars (5-0). Casey Hughston went 2 for 4 with a run for the Crimson Tide (3-1).

 

No. 8 Texas Tech 8-5, Northern Illinois 0-0

In Lubbock, Texas, Orlando Garcia went 4 for 4 with two doubles, two runs and two RBI, and Eric Gutierrez stayed hot with two hits and three RBI as Texas Tech blanked Northern Illinois in the first game of a doubleheader. Tim Proudfoot added three hits and two runs, which was more than enough for Ryan Moseley, who allowed four hits in six scoreless innings. In the second game, Cameron Smith tossed five scoreless innings, and Dominic Moreno closed with the final four as Texas Tech completed the sweep. Tyler Neslony went 2 for 4 with a homer, two runs and two RBI, and Cory Raley contributed two hits and three RBI for the Red Raiders (6-1). Joe Jumonville and Brian Sisler each had two hits for the Huskies (3-2) – Jumonville finished with four hits on the day.

 

No. 9 Texas 13, Minnesota 2

In Austin, Texas, Michael Cantu went 3 for 3 with two doubles and five RBI, and Parker French allowed three hits and one unearned run in six innings as Texas took down Minnesota. Brett Boswell and Collin Shaw each had three hits and two RBI as the Longhorns (4-2) piled up 17 hits. The Golden Gophers fell to 0-4.

 

No. 13 Oklahoma State 11, Washington State 1

In Surprise, Ariz., Jon Perrin tossed six hitless innings with two walks and six strikeouts, and Jon Littell went 3 for 4 with a run with three RBI as Oklahoma State coasted past Washington State. Bryan Case had two hits, including a homer, and two RBI, Conor Costello had two hits and two RBI and Gage Green added two hits and two runs for the Cowboys (2-3), who scored five times in the eighth inning. Pinch-hitter Haakon Lande drove in the lone run for the Cougars (3-3).

 

No. 14 Rice 8, Arizona 5

In Tucson, Ryan Chandler went 3 for 5 with two runs and an RBI from the leadoff spot, and No. 2 hitter Ford Stainback added two hits, two runs and two RBI as Rice held off Arizona. The Wildcats (5-1) plated a run in the eighth and had the bases loaded, but Matt Ditman worked out of the jam for his second save. John Williamson went 3 for 4 with a run and RBI, and Leon Byrd had two RBI for the Owls (4-2). Riley Moore went 3 for 5 with a homer, two runs and two RBI, and Scott Kingery contributed three hits and two RBI for Arizona.

 

No. 17 Florida State 7, Georgia 5

In Athens, Ga., John Sansone matched a career high with four RBI as Florida State outscored Georgia. Sansone's two-run double in the seventh gave the Seminoles (4-1) the lead for good. Taylor Folsom (1-0) recorded the final out in the sixth to pick up the win. Billy Strode (1 IP, H, 2 BB, K) registered his first save. Stephen Wrenn had two hits and two RBI for the Bulldogs (3-1).

 

No. 18 Maryland 8, South Alabama 0

In Mobile, Ala., Mike Shawaryn allowed three hits in seven scoreless innings as Maryland blanked South Alabama. Shawaryn (2-0) did not walk a batter and struck out six. Andrew Bechtold had a two-run single to cap a four-run first for the Terrapins (4-0). LaMonte Wade went 4 for 5 with a run and two RBI for Maryland. Cole Billingsley had two hits for the Jaguars (4-1).

 

No. 19 Mississippi State 6, Marshall 2

In Starkville, Miss., Jacob Robson stayed red hot with three hits and two runs, and Ryan Gridley had a double and two RBI as Mississippi State topped Marshall. Preston Brown struck out eight and allowed one earned run in six innings, and Ross Mitchell finished with three scoreless innings for his first save for the Bulldogs (5-0). Aaron Bossi went 2 for 4 with a run and RBI for the Herd (2-3).

 

No. 20 Oregon 11, New Mexico State 3

In Eugene, Ore., Oregon scored the final eight runs of the contest to top New Mexico State. The Ducks (5-1) scored single runs in the sixth and seventh before putting up six in the eighth. Shaun Chase (2 for 5) highlighted the eighth with a grand slam. Michael Paulson had a double and one RBI for the Aggies (0-6).
