Vanderbilt past Virginia
In Omaha, Neb., Carson Fulmer allowed two hits
over 7.2 scoreless innings as Vanderbilt defeated Virginia 5-1
Monday evening in Game 1 of the Championship Series of the
2015 College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park.
The teams will play the second game in the
best-of three series on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. CT.
Fulmer (14-2) walked two and struck out eight
in recording the victory.
The Commodores (51-19) snapped the scoreless
tie in the bottom of the sixth. With two away, Zander Wiel had
an infield single to third. Bryan Reynolds drew a four-pitch
walk before Will Toffey took the first pitch he saw the other
way for a double down the left field line to drive in both
baserunners and give VU a 2-0 lead.
Vandy added to its lead
in the seventh. Karl Ellison had a leadoff single and was
sacrificed to second. Ro Coleman singled up the middle to
drive in Ellison and make it a 3-0 advantage. After Kevin
Doherty came in from left field to relieve Connor Jones,
Dansby Swanson had a two-out double that brought home Coleman.
Swanson would score on a base hit by Reynolds as the
Commodores took a 5-0 advantage.
The Cavaliers (42-24) were able to scratch
across a run in the ninth. Kenny Towns had a leadoff single,
moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by
pinch-hitter Jack Gerstenmaier as Virginia made it 5-1.
Swanson and Reynolds both had two hits, one run
and one RBI for the Commodores.
Jones (7-3) tossed five scoreless innings
before finishing with seven hits and four runs in 6.1 innings
with two walks and six strikeouts.
