Hollingsworth, Hinojosa Help Texas Eliminate UCI

 

Chad Hollingsworth and Travis Duke combined on a four-hit shutout and C.J. Hinojosa hit the first home run in the 2014 College World Series as Texas edged UC Irvine 1-0 Wednesday evening in front of fans at TD Ameritrade Park.

 

The Longhorns (45-20) will face Vanderbilt on Friday at 2 p.m. CT. Texas will have to beat the Commodores on Friday and Saturday to advance to the CWS championship series. The Anteaters ended their season with a 41-25 mark.

 

Hollingsworth (4-0) allowed four hits and no walks in 8.1 innings with five strikeouts. Duke retired the final two hitters to record his second save.

 

Hinojosa went deep in the top of the seventh for the game's lone run. Texas finished with six hits, as Mark Payton went 2 for 4.

 

Connor Spencer had two hits for UC Irvine. Evan Manarino (4-4, 6.1 IP, 5 H, R, BB, 7 K) suffered the loss.
