Moore Earns 23rd Save as UC Irvine Nips Cal Poly

Vandy blanks Florida, Virginia edges Georgia Tech, UL shuts out Temple

 

In San Luis Obispo, Calif., Andrew Morales fanned nine in eight innings and Sam Moore earned his national-leading 23rd save as UC Irvine edged sixth-ranked Cal Poly 3-2 Friday evening to kick off their Big West series and extend its win streak to nine. Morales (9-0) allowed five hits, one walk and two runs. Moore gave up one hit in the ninth and struck out the side. The Anteaters (15-1, 34-14) erased a 2-1 deficit with two in the top of the fifth. Justin Castro went 2 for 4 with one run and one RBI for UCI. Nick Torres went 2 for 4 for the Mustangs (14-5, 39-10).

 

No. 14 Vanderbilt 3, No. 5 Florida 0

In Gainesville, Fla., Carson Fullmern allowed four hits and struck out eight in his first career complete-game shutout as Vanderbilt evened its series with Florida. The Commodores (15-11, 37-14) scored three times in the fifth inning as Vince Conde had a RBI grounder and another run scored on a throwing error. Karl Ellison then added a safety squeeze to score Conde. Zander Wiel went 3 for 5 with a run for Vandy. Fullmer is now 4-0 as a starter (four starts) and has not allowed a run in 28 innings. Kirby Snead tossed 4.1 innings of scoreless relief for the Gators (19-7, 34-17).

 

No. 1 Virginia 4, Georgia Tech 3

In Charlottesville, Va., Mike Papi had a two-run single in the seventh to erase a 3-2 deficit and lead Virginia to an ACC series-opening win over Georgia Tech, giving head coach Brian O'Connor his 500th career victory. Papi had two hits and a run, while Joe McCarthy was 3 for 4 with a double and a run for the Cavaliers (19-6, 39-9). Austin Young (1-0, 1.1 IP, 2 K) earned the win in relief, while Nick Howard (1 IP, BB, 2 K) recorded his 16th save. Daniel Spingola had two hits and an RBI, while Connor Justus went 2 for 3 with a run for the Yellow Jackets (14-14, 29-21).

 

No. 2 Oregon State 4, UCLA 2

In Corvallis, Ore., Oregon State used a pair of bases-loaded walks to snap a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the eighth and rally past UCLA in the Pac-12 series opener. Ben Wetzler (9-1, 8 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 8 K) earned his school-record 33rd career victory. Scott Schultz fanned two in a perfect ninth for his fifth save. Dylan Davis went 2 for 4 with a run to lead the offense for the Beavers (18-4, 36-8).  Ty Moore had a two-run double in the third to give the Bruins (10-12, 23-23-1) an early 2-0 advantage.

 

No. 4 Florida State 7, North Carolina 0

In Chapel Hill, N.C., Luke Weaver hurled seven scoreless innings as Florida State took the ACC series opener at North Carolina. The Seminoles (18-7, 38-11) clinched their eighth straight ACC Atlantic Division title. Weaver (7-3) allowed five hits and two walks with six strikeouts. DJ Stewart had three doubles and three RBI for FSU. Landon Lassiter and Parks Jordan both had two hits for Tar Heels (13-12, 29-20), who were shut out for the first time since 2001.

 

No. 7 Louisville 2, Temple 0

In Ambler, Pa., Kyle Funkhouser tossed eight shutout innings with 12 strikeouts as Louisville blanked Temple in the opener of their American series to extend its win streak to 12. Funkhouser (10-2) allowed four hits and one walk. Nick Burdi fanned two in the a hitless ninth for his 13th save. The Cardinals (15-4, 39-11) scored single runs in the fifth and sixth. Alex Chittenden went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a run for Louisville. Robert Amaro had two hits and a steal for the Owls (7-12, 12-28). Matt Hockenberry (4-5, 9 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 10 K) went the distance for Temple.

 

No. 8 Washington 4, Bethune-Cookman 0

In Seattle, three pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout as Washington blanked Bethune-Cookman to begin their non-conference series. Jared Fisher (5-3, 5 IP, H, 5 BB, K) was the starter and winner. Trevor Dunlap (3 IP, 2 H, 3 K) and Troy Rallings (1 IP, 2 K) completed the contest. Andrew Ely went 1 for 3 with a run as the Huskies (34-11-1) tallied just three hits themselves. Bryant Munoz went 1 for 2 with a walk for the Wildcats (22-29).

 

No. 9 Oklahoma State 8, Kansas State 0

In Manhattan, Kan., Joe Perrin allowed four hits and struck out a career-best 10 as Oklahoma State extended its hitting streak to seven by beating Kansas State. Tim Arakawa paced the offense with two hits and two RBI, and Gage Green added two hits, two runs and an RBI for the Cowboys (14-5, 36-13). The Wildcats fell to 4-15, 24-26.

 

No. 11 Miami 6, Duke 1

In Durham, N.C., Chris Diaz allowed two hits and a run in eight innings as Miami took the ACC series lid-lifter from Duke. Diaz (9-0) walked three and struck out five. Zack Collins (3 for 5, 2 R, 3 RBI) had an RBI double to spark a three-run first for the Hurricanes (20-5, 36-14). Collins homered in the sixth and had a run-scoring single in the seventh. David Perkins tripled and scored for the Blue Devils (15-10, 30-19).

 

No. 12 Ole Miss 12, Georgia 2

In Oxford, Miss., Auston Bousfield went 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBI as Ole Miss thumped Georgia to begin their SEC set. The Rebels (16-9, 36-14) scored three in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth and three in the sixth to take an 11-2 lead. Brantley Bell and Preston Overbey both drove in a pair for Ole Miss. Chris Ellis (8-0, 6.2 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 2 K) picked up the win. Sean McLaughlin went 2 for 4 with a double, one run and one RBI for the Bulldogs (9-15-1, 24-24-1).

In University Park, Pa., Scott Donley had two hits and three RBI as Indiana shut out Penn State to open their Big Ten series. Kyle Schwarber (2 for 4, 3B) and Sam Travis (HR) both scored three for the Hoosiers (17-2, 33-12). IU scored four in the third in building a 5-0 lead and put up four in the ninth to make it 10-0. Joey DeNato (11-1, 6 IP, 4 H, BB, 3 K) earned the victory, while Thomas Belcher (3 IP, 2 H, 4 K) notched his third save.

 

No. 15 South Carolina 8, Missouri 2

In Columbia, S.C., Gene Cone had a three-run double to cap a four-run fifth as South Carolina stopped Missouri. The Gamecocks (14-11, 37-13) used a three-run fourth to snap a 1-1 tie and extended the lead with four in the fifth. Grayson Greiner (2 for 4, 2B, RBI) and Joey Pankake (3 for 4) both scored twice, while Max Schock went 3 for 4 with one run and one RBI for South Carolina. Jordan Montgomery (7-4, 8.1 IP, 5 H, 2 R, BB, 8 K) earned the victory. Josh Lester went 2 for 3 with a walk and two runs for the Tigers (6-19, 20-28).

In Fort Worth, Texas, Cody Jones and Garrett Crain both went 3 for 4 with two runs and two RBI as TCU topped Oklahoma to kick off their Big 12 series and stretch its win streak to 13. Crain had a two-run single to highlight a four-run third as the Horned Frogs (14-5, 35-13) erased an early 2-0 deficit. Brandon Finnegan (8-2, 4 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 4 K) picked up the win. Mac James went 3 for 4 with one RBI for the Sooners (6-13, 26-24).

In Tempe, Ariz., Mitchell Tolman had a three-run triple in the fifth to break a 2-2 deadlock as Oregon edged Arizona State to begin their Pac-12 set. Both teams tallied a pair in the second. Tolman scored twice, while Josh Graham went 2 for 4 with a run and an RBI for the Ducks (4-8, 36-14). Tommy Thorpe (8-4, 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K) registered the win, while Jake Reed fanned one in a 1-2-3 ninth for his 11th save. Brian Serven had two hits and two RBI, while Trever Allen went 2 for 4 with a double and two runs for the Sun Devils (12-10, 24-21).

 

UTSA 4, No. 18 Rice 2

In San Antonio, Brock Hartson allowed two runs on five hits and struck out eight as UTSA knocked off Rice in Conference USA play. Logan Kinder broke a 2-2 tie with a two-run, inside-the-park homer for the Roadrunners (15-10, 31-19). John Clay Reeves went 2 for 4 with a solo homer for the Owls (18-7, 32-16).

 

Tennessee 4, No. 20 Mississippi State 2

In Starkville, Miss., Nathaniel Maggio delivered a two-run single to spark a four-run fourth as Tennessee topped Mississippi State in the opener of their SEC series. Maggio finished with two hits, while Taylor Smart went 2 for 2 with two walks and a run for the Volunteers (11-14, 29-18). Hunter Martin (4-3, 6.1 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 5 K) recorded the victory, while Andrew Lee (2 IP, 3 H, BB, 4 K) notched his third save. C.T. Bradford went 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI for the Bulldogs (14-11, 31-19), who stranded 12.

 

Liberty 7, Coastal Carolina 1

In Lynchburg, Va., Will Shepherd had a three-run double to highlight a five-run fourth as Liberty took the Big South series opener from Coastal Carolina, clinching the league's regular season title. Nick Lacik went 4 for 5 with a double and two runs, while Ryan Seiz added two hits and two RBI for the Flames (20-1, 36-11), who captured their third Big South regular season crown and first since 2000. Trey Lambert (10-1, 7.2 IP, 4 H, R, BB, 3 K) earned the victory. Kyle Jackson went 1 for 2 with a double, a walk and a run for the Chanticleers (12-10, 22-27).

 

San Diego 5, Pepperdine 4 (11)

In Malibu, Calif., Connor Joe delivered a run-scoring single in the top of the 11th as San Diego edged first-place Pepperdine to start their West Coast series. Joe finished with two hits, while Louie Lechich went 1 for 3 with two walks and a run for the Toreros (16-9, 34-17). Chris Fornaci had an RBI single with two away in the bottom of the ninth to cap a two-run rally for the Waves (15-7, 32-14) and force extra innings. Josh Goossen-Brown (3-2, 3.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 K) registered the victory.

 

St. John's 6, Creighton 5

In Queens, N.Y., Robert Wayman had an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to snap a 5-5 deadlock and propel St. John's past Creighton in a battle for first in the Big East. Troy Dixon had a two-run double in a three-run second for the Red Storm (11-2, 32-15). Matt Clancy (3-3, 2 IP, 2 H, R, BB, 2 K) picked up the win, while Joe Kuzia worked around a pair of walks in the ninth for his 12th save. Ryan Fitzgerald had three hits and two runs, while Mike Gerber added two hits and two RBI for the Bluejays (10-3, 25-15-1).

 

Kennesaw State 5, Northern Kentucky 1

In Highland Heights, Ky., Jacob Bruce had a two-run double to spark a three-run third and erase a 1-0 deficit as Kennesaw State stopped Northern Kentucky to begin their Atlantic Sun series and stretch its win streak to 14, the longest current streak in the nation. Bruce scored in the third on a base hit by Max Pentecost (3 for 5) to make it 3-1. Pentecost extended his hit streak to 29 games. Alex Liquori (2 for 3) had an RBI triple and scored in the fifth as the Owls (12-9, 28-20) extended their lead to 5-1. Jordan Hillyer (6-3, 8 IP, 5 H, UE, 3 BB, 6 K) registered the win. Spurlin went 2 for 4 with a double and a run for the Norse (6-16, 14-32).
