Chittenden, Sturgeon lead Louisville past Vanderbilt

Mercer upsets Florida, Oregon State edges Oregon, FSU tops Stetson

 

In Nashville, Tenn., Alex Chittenden homered and drove in three, while Cole Sturgeon had three doubles and four runs as seventh-ranked Louisville outscored No. 14 Vanderbilt 11-7 Tuesday evening. Chittenden had a two-run homer to cap a three-run top of the first for the Cardinals (38-11). Vince Conde (2 for 5) belted a grand slam in the bottom of the first to give the Commodores (36-13) a one-run advantage. Colin Lyman had a two-run double in a four-run third as Louisville took the lead for good. Zander Wiel (2 for 3, 2 BB, 2 R) had a two-run dinger in the third for Vanderbilt. Brandon Alphin (1-0, 2.1 IP, H, BB) picked up the win in relief. Nick Burdi allowed one hit and fanned five over the final two innings to secure the victory.

 

Mercer 4, No. 5 Florida 2

In Gainesville, Fla., Michael Massi had a two-run homer in the seventh to help Mercer upset Florida. The Bears (35-11) led 2-1 before Massi's blast made it 4-1. Sasha LaGarde went 2 for 5 with one run and one RBI for Mercer. Brandon Barker (4-3, 3 IP, 3 K) earned the victory, while Dimitri Kourtis (2 IP, 3 H, R, BB) recorded his third save. A.J. Puk and John Sternagel both had two hits for the Gators (33-16).

 

No. 2 Oregon State 4 , No. 7 Oregon 3

In Eugene, Ore., Jeff Hendrix had a sacrifice fly with one out in the 12th inning to score Logan Ice with the game-winning run as Oregon State edged Oregon. Scott Schultz (6-2) yielded only two walks and struck out three in 4.1 scoreless innings for the Beavers (35-8). Hendrix finished 2 for 5 with two doubles and three RBI, and Michael Conforto added two hits and gunned down Desmond Santos at the plate from left field in the eighth inning. Shaun Chase went 2 for 3 with a run for the Ducks (34-14).

 

No. 4 Florida State 9, Stetson 4

In DeLand, Fla., Josh Delph went 2 for 2 with two walks, a run and three RBI to lead Florida State past Stetson. DJ Stewart had a two-run single to cap a four-run seventh as the Seminoles (37-11) built a 7-2 lead. John Sansone had two doubles, two runs and one RBI for FSU. Peter Miller (3-3, 3 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 4 K) recorded the win in relief. Mike Fernland had two hits, including a double, and two RBI for the Hatters (20-30).

 

No. 6 Cal Poly 5, Pepperdine 1

In San Luis Obispo, Calif., Brian Mundell drove in three runs in support of Danny Zandona, who tossed five scoreless innings, as Cal Poly avenged a loss last week to Pepperdine. Zandona (2-0) allowed one hit and struck out four in his second start of the season. Aaron Brown drove in the lone run for the Waves (32-13).

 

No. 19 Houston 6, Prairie View A&M 0

In Houston, Andrew Lantrip fanned 10 in seven scoreless innings as Houston blanked Prairie View A&M. Lantrip (5-0) allowed two hits and did not walk a batter. Jared West surrendered two hits in two innings with three punchouts to secure the shutout. The Cougars (36-13) scored single runs in the second and fourth before putting up four in the sixth. Caleb Barker went 2 for 3 with a run and two RBI for Houston. Walter Wells went 2 for 2 for the Panthers (19-28).

 

UC Irvine 16, San Diego 11

In San Diego, Ryan Cooper drove in three runs, and Jonathan Munoz had three hits and three runs as UC Irvine stayed red-hot by beating San Diego. The Anteaters (33-14) scored in every inning but the seventh as Evan Manarino (2-2) allowed two runs in five innings. Connor Spencer added three hits and two runs for the Eaters. Andrew Daniel went 4 for 6 with two runs and two RBI, and Jesse Jenner added two hits and three RBI for the Toreros (33-17).

 

Texas Tech 18, Dallas Baptist 3

In Dallas, Eric Gutierrez homered twice and drove in six, while Anthony Lyons was 5 for 6 with three runs as Texas Tech thumped Dallas Baptist. Tyler Neslony (2 for 4, 2 R, 3 RBI) had a two-run triple to highlight a four-run third for the Red Raiders (37-16). Gutierrez had a grand slam in the fifth to make it 8-0. Stephen Smith (2 for 3, 4 R, 3 RBI) smacked a two-run dinger in the sixth to push the lead to 10-0. Gutierrez had a leadoff homer and later drew a bases-loaded walk in a sixth-run seventh to extend the advantage to 16-0. Jonny Drozd (6-0, 4 IP, 2 H, 3 K) earned the win in relief. RJ Talamantes had a two-run single in a three-run ninth for the Patriots (31-17).
