Howard Helps Virginia Win Series at Miami

Cal Poly upends Cal, Brown outscores W&M, Northridge nips WSU

 

In Coral Gables, Fla., Nick Howard had a two-run single to snap a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth and struck out two in a hitless bottom of the ninth for his sixth save as second-ranked Virginia won 5-3 Monday to capture its ACC series at Miami in front of 2,607 fans at Mark Light Field. Willie Abreu had a three-run triple for the Hurricanes (5-4, 13-12) in the third. Howard had an RBI in a three-run fifth for the Cavaliers (7-2, 19-4). Daniel Pinero went 2 for 3 with a double, two walks, one run and one RBI for UVa. Connor Jones (3-0) fanned two in the eighth to pick up the win.

 

No. 8 Cal Poly 16, California 8

In San Luis Obispo, Calif., Jordan Ellis went 3 for 3 with two walks, three runs and two RBI as Cal Poly defeated California in the finale of their four-game series. The Mustangs (20-4) erased an 8-2 deficit with 13 in the bottom of the second. Nick Torres went 3 for 4 with a double, three runs and three RBI for Cal Poly. Nick Dingilian (1-0, 3.2 IP, 2 H, K) earned the win in relief. Brendan Farney had two hits, including a double, and four RBI for the Golden Bears (11-12).

 

Brown 16, William & Mary 15

In Williamsburg, Va., J.J. Franco had a three-run triple to highlight an eight-run eighth as Brown outscored William & Mary. Franco had four hits and four runs, while Josh Huntley had two hits and four RBI for the Bears (4-6). Nathan Mann (1-0, 2.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 2 K) picked up the victory. Ryan Lindemuth (3 for 6, 3B, 2 R) and Charley Gould (4 for 6, 2 2B) both drove in four for the Tribe (16-7).

 

Cal State Northridge 2, Washington State 1

In Northridge, Calif., Dylan Alexander had an RBI triple and scored in the second as Cal State Northridge nipped Washington State. Alexander finished with two hits, while William Colantono went 2 for 3 with one RBI for the Matadors (10-14). Brandon Warner (1-1, 4.2 IP, 2 H, 3 K) earned the win in relief, while Shay Maltese (2 IP, 2 H, 2 K) notched his third save. Collin Slaybaugh had two hits and a run for the Cougars (9-12).
